As you wander through older, wealthy areas of London, you will spot cast iron covers on the pavement. At one time, when London households were fueled by coal, these cast iron covers were unlocked from inside to allow the delivery of coal. The scullery maid would then distribute the coal to the fireplaces throughout the house. These pavement covers are still in place in many of the elegant old neighborhoods. I love wandering around looking at the boot scrapers which are often still in their original locations as well as the coal hole covers on the sidewalks. These items speak to me of a bygone age and bring back a lot of history. These objects are the great attractions for me as my eye catches sight of something from another era still in place. Nice
