I hate this stupid 4th plinth–every bit of it. I CAN’T BELIEVE this is the best contemporary art sculpture we can find for the 4th plinth. Ridiculous!

Now there are two reasons to go to LEIGHTON HOUSE: for the house is a virtual museum of great importance and now for the Churchill/ Hassan El Glaoul Marrakech, Morocco paintings. Really stunning.

I smiled from ear to ear when I read this. No doubt about it, Edward VIII was erased from memory on several levels.

I have been in England for the month of January, and as a man of route, I immediately established a routine that allowed for work, theater, concerts, walks, “motorbike” rides, museums, Portobello Road, and of course British TV. The history channels intrigued, but BIRDSONG with Eddie Redmayne on BBC1 was one of the finest productions I have ever seen. No matter what I was doing on Sunday evening, I had to be back at the flat by 9:00 PM to enjoy the next episode. It was just like my DOWNTON ABBEY routine. I knew who Eddie Redmayne was, but I had never really known him as a serious actor. Well, I was “blown away” by his spectacular performance of a soldier in the First World War, fighting in the trenches of France–and he survived!. I am hoping they publish the series for our TV’s, but I will even watch it again on my computer. Truly, this is one of the best things I have seen on British TV in a long time–right along with Downton Abbey and a few others. I have to find SEBASTIAN FAULKS novel. Wow!
British TV–that ol’ TELE – I love it! Wow

On numerous occasions, I have written about my high regard for Charles, the Prince of Wales. He seems to touch every worthwhile cause with the hope that he can make a difference in Britain’s cultural life. During his early years, his relationship with Laurens van der Post affected Prince Charles’s attitude toward peoples of other cultures–a very different viewpoint when compared to the attitudes found on the playing fields of Sandhurst where the belief that all the world’s great decisions are made there is prevalent. The Prince has had great interest in Islam and senses his role to calm the public’s views about the radicalism we identify with the Moslem world in our times. His scholarship is deep and careful; I have a great respect for this very sensitive and informed prince. He will make a great king. He is always trying to build bridges and finding solutions. I have to smile when I hear that Charles sends hundreds of “cautions” to members of Parliament. He is well informed, has the best sources of information, and his motive is to inform. He is undaunted. Sounds good to me. What do you think about this?

For years, I have wondered about a shell “shed” on Lower Grosvenor Square, behind Buckingham Palace. Actually, I remember two of these shell buildings on Lwr Grosvenor Square. Today, I decided that I would find out about these buildings which I have wondered about for so long. I took a cab to Buckingham Palace and walked around the Queen’s residence to the Square. To my surprise, there is only one shell building still standing. I stood in front of the Marechal Foch equestrian statue and admired this beautiful triangular square. An elderly gentleman volunteers to keep up the garden, and he was interested in my obvious curiosity about the Shell Shed. Mr. Glynn told me that the Grosvenor Estates had taken down one of the sheds before National Heritage had placed a Preservation Protection on the two sheds. This local resident told me that the sheds were decorated with shells which American soldiers had been brought back to England as souvenirs from the beaches of Normandy at the time of the Normandy Invasion during World War II. I stood there in this beautiful little garden and dropped my head to honor all those young soldiers who gave their lives to liberate an entire continent from a most evil power. Goodness, how is it that I have lived all these years without knowing about this shell shed. In so many ways, it is such a small place–but really, it is a very big place for what it really is. My camera is packed, so I have had to search for images of the square on the Internet. I am sorry for that.
Look beyond the statue, and you will see the shell shed.

February 6, 2012 will mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. In a thousand years, only three monarchs have achieved such a long reign. The then-Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were in Kenya at the beginning of a Commonwealth tour when her father King George VI died at Sandringham. She, Princess Elizabeth, became Queen of England. Tuesday will be a landmark in British history. I was planning to post these comments on Tuesday; however, I will be traveling. So, I will publish this interesting article now. What a fantastic bit of history.

Yesterday, a friend wanted to introduce me to the new fashionable/hip area of Wardour Street, Soho. I was amazed by all the restaurants, clubs, and shops. We walked by PRINCI BAKERY where crowds of people were eagerly lined up for the most fabulous, smelling pizza. The breads were spectacular, the desserts were more than tempting, but the pizza was supreme. Tonight, I invited my London manager Cristina and the head of housekeeping Alice to join me for pizza at PRINCI BAKERY, and it was delicious. Wardour Street is a thriving area, and I was really delighted to have been introduced to this exciting area of London. Wonderful. Enjoy!

Wartski announces a loan exhibition — A DIAMOND JUBILEE TRIBUTE – FABERGE from a private collection. This amazing EXHIBITION will take place from 15 – 25th May 11am to 5 pm 14 Grafton Street, London W1S 4DE. Yesterday, I visited WARTSKI on Grafton Street in the heart of Mayfair. I was thrilled to hear of the upcoming EXHIBITION of a private collection of FABERGE – A DIAMOND JUBILEE TRIBUTE. These kinds of special exhibitions are delighting the public during this special time when we celebrate the Queen’s DIAMOND JUBILEE. Thrilling!
During my visit, I photographed the famous portrait of Queen Alexandra delightfully covered in her magnificent jewels. It was thrilling to see. I also photographed some images of some of the most fabulous pieces of FABERGE which are on offer. Goodness, IT IS INCREDIBLE.

WANDERING through London has been my way of life. I have walked London streets for over 60 years, and I have never tired of one single street or corner. Today has been another one of those fantastic days I so love in this “eternal” city. My dear friend Luis put me on the back of his motorcycle and I went flying through this ancient city, seeing this city that I know so well from the back of a speeding vehicle. I would have probably been frightened had I not known Luis so well and trusted him completely. I had a blast. We left central London, down the Strand into the City, around the Mansion house and the Bank of England, on to Tower Hill and then what was for me UNKNOWN TERRITORY. Traffic was thick as mush, but the bike ripped between buses and cars from one red light to the next one. Horns were sounding, drivers swearing, a few four letter words, and a lot of bouncing and flying along. I couldn’t believe I was doing this. But all of a sudden, I saw the street sign BRICK LANE, and I knew my camera was about to melt away with image after after of some of the most unreasonable graffiti I had ever seen. I loved it, every weird-strange-angry-curious-irredeemably vulgar figure. It was not so much the graffiti that I loved; rather, it was a world where people weren’t afraid to “give it a try.” People walked by these vibrant walls as if this is how the world is to be. There were a few cameras flashing; but they were souvenir visitors who wanted to be shocked or were going to write a blog about it–HM! Vintage clothing shops, motor bike garages, colorful galleries caught my eyes, and I was thrilled to be flying sitting on the back of a bike with my camera and very exciting eye balls. When we left Brick Lane and were ripping down Shoreditch Main Street, I saw a bit of colorful writing that said CHANGE NOW. It made me think, but not enough to discourage my fun ride with cold January breezes chilling my nose and ears. WHAT A BLAST! I hope you will enjoy these images–a bit weak because I was moving pretty fast. Yikes! Here it goes again!

These beautiful buildings were built by the architect NASH for the Prince Regent during the first 30 years of the 19th century. They are built on the site of the old Carlton House, former residence of George IV when Prince of Wales. Notice the PRINCE OF WALES FEATHERS in the pediment of these exquisite buildings. These glorious structures are such a contrast to the restrained tastes of the Prince Regent’s parents, King George II and Queen Charlotte who lived domestically at Buckingham House and Kew Palace. Amazing story.

I started the LONDON CONNECTION thirty years ago. We were the first American company offering private flats in London to foreign visitors. There were a few London agents who were connected to London real estate agents, but we were determined to find an alternative to the hugely expensive hotels which were frustrating travelers who were looking for affordable accommodations. I owned two flats in central London which I used as a starting point for THE LONDON CONNECTION. We had lots of fun and felt we had found an alternative to London hotels. Several London friends offered their homes to our company for visitor accommodations while they were away from London. Thirty years later, what do I do to occupy my time while in London? I join a splendid London team lead by the famous CRISTINA whose professional talent and energy are unmatched. While I am here, I view flats which have been offered to our company to accommodate visitors while the owners are away from London. These flats are private homes which are very interesting with beautiful furnishings and generations of family collections. I love to visit these properties. The more difficult part of my job is the buying and refurbishing of some of the most interesting properties which have remarkable potential. Our designer is a talented engineer whose fantastic work is now enjoyed by our clients. So, we have a remarkable team. We have grown from offering two family flats to a company that buys, refurbishes, and decorates some of the finest flats in London. I am very proud of the team which has proved capable and successful. I feel privileged to work with this professionalism. So, I take on private family flats, and I join the efforts to turn around a tired flat and watch the accommodation become a successful property which will become a happy temporary residence for a visitor enjoying London. Let me show you a few photographs which will show you my work. Remember, I work on my blog at least four hours a day; being in London gives me new ideas which will keep me writing for the next two months. I love it; I hope you enjoy it as well.
Here is a family flat we have added to our portfolio today:
Now,let me show you the work we do to bring back a tired property. There is a great sense of achievement when these accommodations come alive again! Enjoy
We meet wherever we can squeeze in some time. Here is a typical scene. I am the photographer, Cristina, and Marco are deep in discussion. Really wonderful and successful.
