FELIX DEFRIQUE’S COMMESSO OF QUEEN VICTORIA *** 1851

Filed under: jewelry — tmooresr @ 1:28 am

Thomas Sully’s 1838 portrait of Queen Victoria was the inspiration for the French Jeweller FELIX DEFRIQUE’s commesso brooch which was exhibited at the GREAT EXHIBITION of 1851.  A COMMESSO is a carved cameo shell enhanced with emeralds, diamonds, and rubies.  For Defrique’s unique and exquisite workmanship, Prince Albert awarded him with a special recognition.  Today the jewel is exhibited at the V&A on the Cromwell Road.  Isn’t it exquisite.  Wonderful!
