MARLBOROUGH HOUSE: Queen Alexandra’s pet cemetery

Filed under: Trivia — tmooresr @ 4:34 am

I love  trivia, especially when it deals with bees, sheep, dogs, and chickens–funny combination, but that is just me!  Queen Alexandra loved her dogs who were part of her “family” atmosphere which she created with her grandchildren.  Her biographer Lady Batiscombe said Queen Alexandra had no control over her grandchildren, and they were wild as march hares.  I grinned when I read that comment in her biography of the Queen and thought to myself:  I’LL BET SHE HAD NO CONTROL OF HER BELOVED DOGS EITHER.   When I ran across this image of Queen Alexandra’s pet cemetery at Marlborough House, I had to smile from ear to ear.   What really struck me was the marker for Edward VII’s last dog Caesar who walked in the King’s funeral cortege in front of the Kaiser and caused a great stir when the Kaiser resented following a dog.  Look at the snapshot;  you will see Caesar–the first marker.  (His dog collar said  I AM THE KING’S DOG–all in jewels, created by Faberge.)  I think it is wonderful.
