We all known well the front gates of Buckingham Palace which have been redesigned and added to many times since the reign of Queen Victoria. Edward VII made significant changes as did King George V. King George VI restored/replaced several parts of the front gates and lamps during and after the numerous bombings of World War II. But for some reason I have paid no attention to the great gates which are part of the palace itself. These two images were sent to me by a reader who points out that the inner gates date from Queen Victoria’s time and show her VR (Victoria Regina). In fact, I don’t think I have ever seen the inner gates closed. I am off to London soon, and I am going to look into this interesting detail. I really enjoy my readers who point out such wonderful details.
