PICCADILLY CIRCUS WHERE YOU WILL MEET EVERYONE FROM ALL OVER THE PLANET

Filed under: LONDON WALKS,PHOTO SHARING,caught with the camera — tmooresr @ 6:15 pm

DRIVING AROUND PICCADILLY CIRCUS AND UP SHAFTESBURY AVENUE IS A NIGHTMARE.  I avoid the CIRCUS if at all possible.  The other evening, I had some time before I went to the theater, and decided I would “experience” the PICCADILLY CIRCUS scene.  Years ago, I took my children to see all the spiked hair and amazing outfits, but I have not been motivated to spend time since.

Well, I went to PICCADILLY CIRCUS and enjoyed myself a great deal.  I had my theater ticket, a 20 pound note, and my umbrella with me, so no one would find any great treasure in my pockets.  I put my camera around neck because I knew it would be photo opportunity after photo opportunity.  I was determined to enjoy myself, and I was not disappointed.

There must be no one left in Rome/Milan/Naples.  Hundreds of Italians were at PICCADILLY CIRCUS enjoying themselves as you would expect.  The young Italian ladies are absolutely beautiful and were posing for photos with their friends.

Then came the Spaniards.  It must be hot in southern Spain because they all came to London to cool off.  They were in small bunches all around the CIRCUS reading the A-Z trying to figure out where they were going next.  There was a sound of music in the air, and I expected everyone to start dancing at any minute.

Everyone there completed ignored the traffic whirling around them– the tour buses, the bicycle taxis, the fabulous cars, and the cyclists.

The souvenir stand was selling refigerator magnets for 1.5 pounds each, and I think every tourist had at least one in his pocket.

Of course there were those who had been drinking too much, but that is to be expected.  Lovers were glued to each other with their eyes aware of no one but their partners.  There is a lot of energy when young lovers gather to enjoy an evening.  They were all bundled up because it was cold in London.

I had to smile at all the shopping bags serving as foot rests or pillows for those who had been spending their souvenir money.

One Israeli fellow wanted me to take his picture.  I told him I would post his picture on my website.  Then I got a real smile from one happy young man who was hunting for some beautiful Spanish girl to spend the evening with.  Of course THE LADS came around and acted like a line of bulls ready to “bully” anyone in their way.  No one paid any attention.

I was amazed that there was no police presence in case things got out of hand.  A lovely couple with their two little children in strollers were watching all the goings-on.  We started to talk only to learn that he worked for EASY JET  and travels all over Europe.  They were a lovely family, and I enjoyed my visit.

MARY QUANT would have been thrilled to see all the mini-skirts.  These long, outrageous stockings were topped with something that might be considered one third of a skirt.  Prink and red stripes with a blue mini-skirt  or  brown and black long stockings with a purple mini.  Goodness, there were more flashing bums on PICCADILLY CIRCUS that evening than I had seen in my entire life.  What young people can get away with!  Well…….

I love to see people enjoying each other, taking photographs, laughing, and chatting up someone.  Everyone was acting YOUNG.

I enjoyed my time there.  It was a good interlude in my day, and I felt good about people enjoying their time together.  They came to have fun, and that is exactly what they were doing.  SMILES EVERYWHERE.  I know my grandchildren would be right in the middle of mayhem.

What a lot of fun.  Wonderful.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE – PHOTO SHARING

Filed under: PHOTO SHARING — tmooresr @ 11:29 am

Do you like to PEOPLE WATCH?  There is no better place than in TRAFALGAR SQUARE.  You will see it all while you take a few minutes off, resting on the steps in TRAFALGAR SQUARE.  This great square has had such a great history.  Where the NATIONAL GALLERY IS NOW was once the Royal Stables and Mews for the King’s horses, carriages, and falcons–all moved to Buckingham Palace when George IV moved the Royal Residence to the new palace.  The bottom of the Square was once the original CHARING CROSS where the great monument originally stood, about where the statue of Charles I stands today.  The exquisite bronze equestrian statue of Charles I escaped Cromwell’s ax when the Royalists took it away and buried it to save it from Cromwell’s destructive hand.  When Charles II returned after Cromwell’s death, the magnificent equestrian statue was returned to the delight of London’s citizens who were fed up with Cromwell.  During World War II, the statue was again taken away for safe keeping.  It is interesting to note that a miniature of the sculpture was purchased by the Queen Mother for Clarence House when it came up for sale a few years;  it still remains in Clarence House with Prince Charles.

Nelson’s column is for me the center of London.  It was erected in the middle of the last century to commemorate Lord Nelson’s great victory over the French navy at the Battle of Trafalgar, putting an end to the possibility of French domination on the sea as well as on land.  It was a great victory–to be followed, of course, by Wellington’s victory over Napoleon at Waterloo.

Stand on the steps of the National Gallery, look down the Square, down Whitehall to the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben.  The view will stir your blood.  If you are still on your feet, start your walk down Whitehall past some of the most important buildings in London.

I love to sit and enjoy the beauty of this great square.  Londoners celebrated the end of the war in Europe in 1945 in this square, and even the two young princesses were allowed to mingle with everyone celebrating the great occasion.  I can think of a lot of great Britains who deserve to be on the top of that great column with Nelson including Winston Churchill. For me personally, I’d put my own grandfather up there for the heritage he left me!  You will feel the same way when you stand there.

Join the crowd.  You will love it.  I hope you enjoy my casual photographs.

QE2 and QUEEN VICTORIA — SPECTACULAR IMAGES OF THE QUEENS OF THE SEA

Filed under: PHOTO SHARING — tmooresr @ 10:40 am

Stephanie and I are joining friends for a TRANSATLANTIC voyage from New York to Southampton next year.  We would love to have you join us!  While planning this trip, I found these images of the QE2 and the QUEEN VICTORIA when the two ships were both in Sydney Harbor.  The photographs are so spectacular, so I had to share them with my readers.  Don’t they make you want to pack and go NOW.  Needless to say, our little group is loooking forward to this crossing.  Hopefully, it will be a smooth crossing.  Several years ago, our family rented a yacht in Piraeus/Athens and sailed through the Mediterranean for a month.  It was one rough storm after another–YIKES!!  It has taken me years to put that memory behind me, so I am again going to give a ship a second chance.  Some people are sailors, and some are cyclists, some are hikers–Me?  I am a walker, a real WALKER when it comes to LONDON.   But, these magnificent images of QE2 AND QUEEN VICTORIA excite me a great deal.  I had to share them with people who read this blog.  ENJOY.  Thanks.

When my father took me to Europe on the Queen Mary when I was young, he told me a funny story.  The owner of CUNARD came to King George V at Buckingham Palace with the intention to tell the King that he was naming the ship QUEEN VICTORIA.  He met with the King and said to him: “Your Majesty, I am going to name my ship after the greatest Queen of all times….”  The King cut him off and said: “My wife, Queen Mary, would be honored.”  The King’s guest was so stunned, and thanked the King and left Buckingham Palace with NO FURTHER INTENTION of naming the ship QUEEN VICTORIA.  That is the amusing origin of the name of the luxury liner THE QUEEN MARY.  King George V was a man of few words.  Queen Mary never spoke in public except for the 28 words she spoke when she christened the ship which carried her name.  I think this is a great story. AND IT IS TRUE.  Amusing.

COLUMBIA FLOWER MARKET–IF YOU LOVE FLOWERS LIKE I LOVE FLOWERS

450px-Flowers_for_sale_at_the_Columbia_Road_market_1COLUMBIA FLOWER MARKET IS OPEN EVERY SUNDAY MORNING.  The MARKET was established in 1869 as a covered food market by philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts for 400 stalls with flats above in a tall Gothic building.  The market closed in 1886 because the traders preferred selling outdoors.

Then the new market on Columbia Road was moved to Sunday by Act of Parliament in order to accommodate the needs of local Jewish traders.  This also provided the opportunity for Covent Garden traders to sell their stock left over from Saturday.  The enduring interest and demand for CUT FLOWERS and plants and caged song birds was introduced by Huguenot immigrants.  The pub at the end of the street is called THE BIRDCAGE.

The Market suffered a direct hit during the BLITZ which forced the market into decline.  From the 1960′s, new rules require traders to attend regularly, and the market has enjoyed a new resurgence with the increasing popularity of gardening programs.

The MARKET is in operation every Sunday 8am to 2pm.  Traders arrive 4am every Sunday morning to set up their stalls.  A wide range of plants, bedding plants, shrubs, bulbs, and freshly cut flowers are available at good prices.

The MARKET also has a number of shops selling bread and cheeses, sandwiches, antiques and garden accessories.  There are also a number of outlets selling unusual international edibles, soap, candlesticks, and Buddhist artefacts.

The MARKET is popular not only with plant and flower buyers but also with photographers and television companies who regularly film here.

I will be at the MARKET in August, and I am anxious to share my pictures with my readers.  In the meantime, please take your own photos and pass them to me.  I will post them on this blog.  I know a luggage company in San Francisco whose owner James Stubbs was born while his family lived on Columbia Road in 1966.  He tells wonderful stories how the street completely changed every Sunday morning, but during the rest of the week, it was just an East End Street with a lot of local color.  As a young boy, he had his first job cleaning up the street with his mates after the Flower Market had finished.  Great story.

A STOLEN BIKE IN LONDON – GONE FOREVER — WELL, MAYBE!

IMG_2812My olest son– whom many of you know in the LONDON CONNECTION OFFICES here in the States– recently was in London working with ourLondon team, looking at new flats, and riding his “miracle” IBIS bicycle all over London.  Well, this is an amazing story which I thought my readers would enjoy.  Lots of lessons here to be learned.

Thomas had arranged a dinner meeting in Islington to discuss new employees for the company.  Thomas rode his IBIS bike to the restaurant and dutifully locked the bike with a lock –perfectly suitable for the small western town where he lives–never realizing that he was now in one of the largest cosmopolitan centers in the world, and he needed a lock suitable to the new setting.

photoAfter dinner, he left the restaurant only to find that his bike had been stolen.  He called me on the phone and said:  I HAVE JUST HAD THE MOST HORRIBLE DAY OF MY LIFE.  I thought for sure he was in a hospital with a crushed skull and missing one leg.  Well, it turned out that some thug had made off with his IBIS bike.  He contacted his good friend SCOT NICOL owner of IBIS CYCLES in California.  And, this is where the story gets good.

This bike was unique.  The serial number was unique–a pre-production model that was never built except for Thomas.  The bike was copper metalic, and looked like something Zsa Zsa Gabor or Liberace would have ridden.  Needless to say, anyone into cycling would have known what this IBIS carbon fiber bike was all about.

Picture 3The front fork was a pre-production NINER CARBON FRONT FORK in “solid gold” color.  The serial number of the fork was also unique as this was the only bike with such a serial number.  The racing tires were RACING RALPH TIRES.

Scot Nicol of IBIS CYCLES in California immediately contacted his distributor in London, 2PURE .  The London company immediately went to work in an all-out effort to locate this unique bike worth 4,764 UK pounds.  It had been decided that the individual who stole the bike knew what this bike was and knew that he could get more for the bike if it was sold in parts.  Safer, probably.  SURE ENOUGH, the “solid gold” NINER CARBON FORKS showed up on Ebay.  IBIS CYCLES was contacted immediately.

The strategy was established that they would bid on the forks to whatever level was required to buy the bike.  When the FORK was won on Ebay, the contact person and his London post code would appear.  Perfect!  That is exactly what happened.  Thomas bid on his own FORKS and won the bid and got the details of the person who had stolen his bike.  He lived only two streets away from where the bike was taken.  HIS NAME WAS DEAN SETTLE, and his post code in Islington was accurate:   London N7 8TN.

What happened next?  The police were contacted and then the crime bureau.  All the papers were sent with photos of serial verifications.  MR. DEAN SETTLE was found, arrested, and jailed.  I am happy to report that that MR. DEAN SETTLE’s bike business on Ebay is no more. His ebay name was “fixedattempt”–So you all have it now, and be careful!

Picture 1And what about the bike?  The GOLD fork has been recovered, and IBIS CYCLES and their representatives in London are hot on the trail of this unique bicycle.  This carbon fiber IBIS  bike won’t be difficult to track down:  unique color, unique serial number, and IBIS clearly evident on the frame.  The PUNK, Mr. Dean Settle, will be the key to finding it.

We later learned that he had numerous items on EBAY, so anyone dealing with bicycles and parts on Ebay, be careful.  If you run into someone in London riding a copper metalic IBIS bike, call the police in London or IBIS CYCLES in California.  They are waiting for your calls.

We had 786,000 reads of this blog during the month of May.  I don’t know of a better bunch of friends than my readers.  I enjoy you all.  The IBIS BIKE story is with you all now.  Ear to the rail!

What a great tale.  Thanks.

GARTER DAY PHOTOS – WINDSOR CASTLE -June, 2010

Royals+Attend+Order+Garter+Service+9q3L-7XyoN8lThe Queen has had a busy week with The Duke of Edinburgh’s 89th birthday, TROOPING THE COLOUR, and Garter Day at Windsor Castle yesterday.  I have posted several pictures of each occasion.

It is nice to see Prince William so involved in the pageantry he will one day lead.  Certainly good training for such a young prince.

prince_william_order_of_the_garter1The Duke of Wellington is 94 and is the oldest Garter Knight.  As he left St.George’s yesterday, he fell–only shaken, no broken bones.  The photograph I am posting is quite an image with the Queen clearly concerned.

20100614_zaf_n44_045.jpgEnjoy the photographs.  The Garter Ceremony was reinstated by the Queen’s father, King George VI, in 1948 after World War II.   The ORDER OF THE GARTER is the highest level of chivalry in the United Kingdom, and the Garter Knights are personally appointed by the Queen.  The Knights are senior members of the Royal Family, former Prime Ministers, and heads of other European Royal Families usually related to the Queen (ex.  Queen Margaret of Denmark and Queen Beatrix of Holland).

prince_andrew_prince_william_prince_edward_order_of_the_garter1A busy schedule for the Queen.  She continues to thrive and to carry out her royal duties.

WE ALL HAVE FAVORITE PHOTOS.  Twice a month, I will post a blog of photographs which you have taken or have run into from whatever source.  Don’t be shy–send them to me!  Some of the great films produce fabulous photographs.  Some of the designers and models create amazing images.  Some of your trips to the UK will produce beautiful photographs.  I will post my readers’ favorite photos on the first Monday and third Monday of each month.  I will select five for each blog.  SHARING is always fun;  and hopefully, you will all get into the excitement of this addition of THE ANGLOPHILE .  The images are fine.  The photographs will speak for themselves.  There is no need for commentary.  Hopefully, this will be a fun SHOW AND TELL.  Let’s get going.  I will start by posting five images that interest me.  I don’t know why I like them;  they interest me.

This should be fun.  I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT READERS OF THIS BLOG WILL ENJOY SEEING IMAGES WHICH ARE POSTED FOR SHARING.
