MEET THE LONDON CONNECTION TEAM — London

Filed under: London Connection — tmooresr @ 11:33 pm

THE LONDON CONNECTION has been offering private flats in London for visitors for nearly thirty years.  During this period of time, we have had only two Managers who have cared for our properties and have seen to every detail of the London operation–important for our visitors’ comfort.    These people will be the ones who are behind the scenes in London who pick you up at the airport (David Norman and his team — Maureen has been with us for 21 years), care for housekeeping of the flats (Conchita, Jamie,  Alice-11 years, and Riccardo and others), let-in ladies (Maria,Vanessa,  Cristina),  and our incredible MANAGER (CRISTINA) WHO IS THE LEADER OF THE PACK.  In all the years we have been enjoying this business, we have never had such a team as we have now.  THEY ARE FABULOUS, and you will get to know them personally when you arrive.

Twice a year, we get together for a night out.  We always go to Chinatown in Soho, and then we go to a pub where we let our hair down and talk about our operation.  I listen to what the people on the front lines have to say to improve our operation, and then we laugh with each other about funny events that have happened like the time an elderly gentleman’s suitcase arrived–right suitcase with his name tag and all–filled with a lady’s lingerie.  Customs or Airport Security had obviously been checking suitcases before the luggage was loaded on the plane and put the wrong items in the right cases.  He was so upset and called our manager who called our driver to take the man to a department store to get him a few clothes so he could carry on with his trip;  we didn’t think this 82-year-old gentleman would look very good in a lady’s lace thong and bra!  That’s almost as funny as the lady who arrived one month early to her flat.   When she looked at her receipts and documents she realized she had booked her flat for October, but came in September.  OUR MIGHTY TEAM WENT TO WORK, as you can imagine.  Anyway, let me introduce our team to you in one of the images, and then you can enjoy the other photos of the TEAM having a night out.

In this photograph in front of the Chinese restaurant, we see David Norman standing on the left–your driver;   Jamie Walker next–the handy man of the team;   then Vanessa–veteran let-in lady and in charge of the parties;  Riccardo – caretaker of several flats and a real gentleman;   Conchita–housekeeper of several flats (She’s the sweetie of the team);   Maria -lovely let-in lady and caretaker;   and CRISTINA – VERY CAPABLE MANAGER AND LEADER OF THE PACK.  Alice, the head housekeeper who has been with us for over 11 years, was unable to attend our little party.

This is a group of professional people who know how this business works.  Cristina has been in charge of properties for two other companies and for numerous private families, and there is no one who can match her energy and ability to solve problems (like house alarms going off at 2:00 am), and she comes to the LONDON CONNECTION with amazing experience.  There is no one better in the business.  We were really pleased to have her lead our London Team.  Fabulous attention to detail–THAT’S HER TRADEMARK!

Enjoy these photos.  I am posting them so you will have a feeling for our group in London.  We are really pleased you will get to know us well.  I decided that our formal photographs did not give you a real picture of the team–those kinds of pictures are just stick figures in a studio.  THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE.  Join us in a good laugh!  We really like being together, and we know our business well.

THE ANGLOPHILE BLOG REACHES 1,400,050 READERS IN AUGUST

Filed under: London Connection — tmooresr @ 2:43 am

We at the LONDON CONNECTION are thrilled that over one million visitors are reading our blog.  A year ago, I was dragged to see JULIE AND JULIA where “Julie” starts her blog about Julia Child’s recipes.  I sat in the movie, and a brain wave hit me.  WHY DON’T I WRITE ABOUT WHAT I LOVE?  LONDON!

Well, I started writing my posts as emails to my friends and up-coming visitors.  Then my son Richard set up THE ANGLOPHILE blog site.  My son Thomas Jr. said he would post my pictures as long as I didn’t go wild.  Well, I have gone completely mad now.

One year later, after as much as 5/6 hours a day writing and researching, over a million visitors are reading the site.  I have tried to give good information for people who are traveling to London for their first visit as well as to experienced visitors to London.  I have had hundreds of personal emails giving me ideas, sending me photos, or telling me about some interesting event or site.  The blog has literally been consuming.  My wife says there are four people in our marriage:  She, I, the dog Rosie, and my BLOG.  Often in the middle of the night, something comes to mind.  On goes the light, up comes the computer, out goes my wife, and under the covers goes the dog.  It is what you have to call GLORIFIED CHAOS.  But I have loved it so much.

I just want to send you all a great big THANK YOU for supporting my efforts.  I will continue to write, please continue to read, and by all means keep sending me ideas and correcting my typos.

This is one of the most exciting activities I have ever been involved in.  Every morning, I leave the flat and walk the streets of LONDON in search of a new secret or a bit of TRIVIA.   I often visit a new flat or have lunch with one of our team members, but eventually, my camera and I are pounding the streets of London.

KEEP ME GOING;  I LOVE YOU ALL.

Much affection to you.

HISTORY OF A FABULOUS JEWEL – Queen Alexandra’s STARBURST BROACH

GW237H361Pieces of jewelry from the Queen’s collection have very interesting histories.  They all have stories about how they came into collection.  It is interesting to see the various pieces being worn by several Queens, generation after generation.

GW235H380QUEEN ALEXANDRA’S STARBURST BROACH is a magnificent diamond creation, designed for a glamorous Queen who enjoyed the society of the EDWARDIAN AGE.  Queen Victoria cautioned the Prince and Princess of Wales about extravagant styles, but Bertie and Alex would hear nothing of it.  Marlborough House was the center of London society, and Edward and Alexandra held court in contrast to the dreary world of Buckingham Palace with a Queen who remained in mourning, year after year.

This spectacular STARBURST BROACH was often worn by Queen Alexandra.  When she died, it was left to Queen Mary who never wore the jewel.  Queen Mary gave the jewel to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth for their coronation in 1937.  After the coronation, the magnificent broach was put away for 75 years.

1074436During the recent State Banquet at Windsor Castle for the President of France, the Queen wore her dazzling rubies:  tiara, earrings, tiara. AND the ALEXANDRA STARBURST  is brought out for this very elegant occasion.

GW236H396I thought you would enjoy reading about this broach which the Queen will have on display at the QUEEN’S GALLERY this summer.

Thank you,

GW238H198Tom

A STOLEN BIKE IN LONDON – GONE FOREVER — WELL, MAYBE!

IMG_2812My olest son– whom many of you know in the LONDON CONNECTION OFFICES here in the States– recently was in London working with ourLondon team, looking at new flats, and riding his “miracle” IBIS bicycle all over London.  Well, this is an amazing story which I thought my readers would enjoy.  Lots of lessons here to be learned.

Thomas had arranged a dinner meeting in Islington to discuss new employees for the company.  Thomas rode his IBIS bike to the restaurant and dutifully locked the bike with a lock –perfectly suitable for the small western town where he lives–never realizing that he was now in one of the largest cosmopolitan centers in the world, and he needed a lock suitable to the new setting.

photoAfter dinner, he left the restaurant only to find that his bike had been stolen.  He called me on the phone and said:  I HAVE JUST HAD THE MOST HORRIBLE DAY OF MY LIFE.  I thought for sure he was in a hospital with a crushed skull and missing one leg.  Well, it turned out that some thug had made off with his IBIS bike.  He contacted his good friend SCOT NICOL owner of IBIS CYCLES in California.  And, this is where the story gets good.

This bike was unique.  The serial number was unique–a pre-production model that was never built except for Thomas.  The bike was copper metalic, and looked like something Zsa Zsa Gabor or Liberace would have ridden.  Needless to say, anyone into cycling would have known what this IBIS carbon fiber bike was all about.

Picture 3The front fork was a pre-production NINER CARBON FRONT FORK in “solid gold” color.  The serial number of the fork was also unique as this was the only bike with such a serial number.  The racing tires were RACING RALPH TIRES.

Scot Nicol of IBIS CYCLES in California immediately contacted his distributor in London, 2PURE .  The London company immediately went to work in an all-out effort to locate this unique bike worth 4,764 UK pounds.  It had been decided that the individual who stole the bike knew what this bike was and knew that he could get more for the bike if it was sold in parts.  Safer, probably.  SURE ENOUGH, the “solid gold” NINER CARBON FORKS showed up on Ebay.  IBIS CYCLES was contacted immediately.

The strategy was established that they would bid on the forks to whatever level was required to buy the bike.  When the FORK was won on Ebay, the contact person and his London post code would appear.  Perfect!  That is exactly what happened.  Thomas bid on his own FORKS and won the bid and got the details of the person who had stolen his bike.  He lived only two streets away from where the bike was taken.  HIS NAME WAS DEAN SETTLE, and his post code in Islington was accurate:   London N7 8TN.

What happened next?  The police were contacted and then the crime bureau.  All the papers were sent with photos of serial verifications.  MR. DEAN SETTLE was found, arrested, and jailed.  I am happy to report that that MR. DEAN SETTLE’s bike business on Ebay is no more. His ebay name was “fixedattempt”–So you all have it now, and be careful!

Picture 1And what about the bike?  The GOLD fork has been recovered, and IBIS CYCLES and their representatives in London are hot on the trail of this unique bicycle.  This carbon fiber IBIS  bike won’t be difficult to track down:  unique color, unique serial number, and IBIS clearly evident on the frame.  The PUNK, Mr. Dean Settle, will be the key to finding it.

We later learned that he had numerous items on EBAY, so anyone dealing with bicycles and parts on Ebay, be careful.  If you run into someone in London riding a copper metalic IBIS bike, call the police in London or IBIS CYCLES in California.  They are waiting for your calls.

We had 786,000 reads of this blog during the month of May.  I don’t know of a better bunch of friends than my readers.  I enjoy you all.  The IBIS BIKE story is with you all now.  Ear to the rail!

What a great tale.  Thanks.

MEET SHEYNE, THE LONDON CONNECTION’S NEW TALENT

Filed under: London Connection — tmooresr @ 10:13 am

IMG_0857We are a busy office–emails, bookings, receipts, sales conversations, new acquisitions, let-ins, follow-up reports, publicity, the BLOG, Taxes, airport arrivals, airport returns, client credit card payments, payments by checks, the hospitality staff, on and on.  But we have a new employee in our US office who is really going to help us with our computer work and graphics.

SHEYNE is a sixteen year old genius.  He goes to a private school and lives in an amazingly creative family.  His parents are dear friends of Mrs. Moore and me.  They own a great deal of Maui real estate, so Sheyne has been around “property people” all his life.    I have watched this young man do brilliantly in his studies, in his film production classes, and in his computer work.  He has designed web pages for a few companies and charities– with great success.

One afternoon, Thomas Jr. told me he can’t keep up with all the pictures scheduled for my blog.  We need help posting client letters about their trips to our flats in London. We have had the best intentions to write a business quarterly news letter.  WELL, IT IS ALL ABOUT TO HAPPEN.

IMG_0862THE COMPUTER AGE has changed the way we do business and communicate with each other.  Young minds amaze me.  Sheyne’s best friend outside his family is his computer.  The name of his office computer is CHURCHILL. By the time I arrived in the office this morning, he had already posted the photographs for the blog.

We want to introduce our readers to SHEYNE ANDERSON and his computer CHURCHILL.  This young man gives me faith in the abilities of young people.  He is the perfect result of loving, caring parents who have made their children the focus of their lives.  He has a lot to offer THE LONDON CONNECTION.

Welcome aboard, Sheyne.  His email is SheyneA@ConnectionsMG.com   He is already making great contributions to our operation.  I wanted our readers to enjoy the progress of this fine young man.

BRAVO, Sheyne.

LONDON ITINERARY FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Almost daily, I receive a call for a suggested itinerary for first-time visitors to London.  It is a difficult request because everyone comes to London with different interests and expectations.  Let me sequence some activities which might be helpful.  This itinerary is designed for visitors to THE LONDON CONNECTION flats in London, but there is enough of a structure which can be modified and redesigned for those coming to London staying in numerous accommodations.

SAMPLE ITINERARY – Level #1

DAY 1:  Depart from home for London.  Bring PASSPORT, CREDIT CARDS, ACCOMMODATION DOCUMENTS, PLANE TICKETS, DRIVERS LICENSE, PRESCRIPTIONS,  LONDON CONTACT NUMBERS (Driver and let-in lady), and THEATRE TICKET information.  Leave your London phone # with friends and family at home.  Pack light, and get a good night’s rest before departure.  DO NOT pack the last minute –you will take far too many clothes.  Do not stay up all night thinking you will sleep on the plane.  Bad planning.   Take your MICHELIN GUIDE TO LONDON to read on plane.   Be to the airport 2 1/2 hours before scheduled flight departure.  ALWAYS CHECK WITH THE AIRLINES TO BE SURE THE FLIGHT IS ON TIME AND THERE ARE NO COMPLICATIONS.  Best to have no surprises on departure morning.  If there is time and a CHANGE BUREAU is convenient, purchase 100 Pounds Sterling–good to arrive with a bit of cash in hand.  I STRONGLY ADVISE NOTIFYING YOUR MOBILE PHONE COMPANY TO ARRANGE YOUR USE OF YOUR MOBILE WHILE IN LONDON.  It is IMPERATIVE that you notify your credit card companies that you will be using your card while in London so they don’t refuse charges thinking FRAUD.  I myself have forgotten to notify the bank and had to call them from London to notify them that I would be using the credit card in England.  BE SURE TO TAKE YOUR BANK PHONE NUMBER TO NOTIFY THE BANK IN CASE OF A STOLEN CARD.  I also carry a xerox copy of my information page of my passport which I keep in my accommodation just in case someone decides to pinch my original.  Going to the American Embassy with a xerox copy of the original is a much better idea than arriving with no identification in hand.  MY FATHER USED TO SAY, TRAVEL WITH YOUR VALUABLES IN YOUR FRONT POCKET;  IF SOMEONE GETS THEM THERE THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET.

l11_8

3252011274_8d21aa8da3

DAY 2:  Flights from North America arrive Heathrow and Gatwick usually before noon.  Some come as early as 6:30 am.  Our excellent team of drivers headed by DAVID NORMAN (telephone:  07904232782) will collect you.  55 pounds for pick-up for up to 5 persons.  I strongly recommend being met;  the arrival at the property is problem free–everyone knows where “everywhere ” else is on the morning of arrival/let-in.

DSC_0016

They will meet you as you come through Her Majesty’s Customs at the INFORMATON BOOTH with a card with your name and THE LONDON CONNECTION.  Pay the driver directly.  Pick up English pounds at an ATM so you can pay the driver directly at the time of service.   IF YOU ARE HELD IN CUSTOMS OR IN BAGGAGE CLAIM DUE TO A LOST PIECE OF LUGGAGE, BE SURE TO CALL THE DRIVER (07904232782) WHO IS WAITING FOR YOU OUTSIDE–remember, his parking meter is ticking away.  The driver will call your let-in lady at the property to coordinate your let-in orientation;  we don’t want people waiting.  That’s not a good way to start a trip especially when you are tired and want A SHOWER.  Enjoy the LET-IN LADY who will give you a thorough introduction to the flat and then give you her contact details in case you need her during your stay.  (Cristina:  07956583747)

DSC_0014

Take a quick shower and find the local grocery store to buy a few supplies for breakfast and snacks like juice, bread, coffee, jam, eggs, back, butter.

DSC_0001

Then go to the local tube station and buy your OYSTER CARD which will give unlimited use of the tube and public busses for your week in London.

DSC_0013

I SUGGEST A ONE-HOUR SLEEP–no more or you won’t sleep at night.  For the evening, I suggest my favorite walk:  tube to GREEN PARK STATION and walk through GREEN PARK to BUCKINGHAM PALACE.

Chelsea Towers, Rosary Gardens, 044

DSC_0100

The Palace in the evening when no one is there is a wonderful start to a trip.  The setting is fabulous.  Begin your walk down the Mall past Lancaster House, Clarence House (home of Prince Charles and his wife and two sons William and Harry), Marlborough House, and on to TRAFALGAR SQUARE.  Continue down Whitehall past the Admiralty Building, the Banqueting House, Horse Guards, 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament, and Westminster Abbey.  Remember this is an evening walk, so expect to see these fabulous monuments all lighted up.  You will enjoy them in the day when you will visit inside.  Take a cab back to your flat and FALL SOUND ASLEEP.  You might wake up during the night because your brain is still on your home time.  That will go away.  BUT GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST.

Day 3:  First thing, take the tube to TOWER TUBE STATION to visit the TOWER OF LONDON.  Some people like to take the free tours.  I prefer to enter the medieval fortress and go directly to the JEWEL HOUSE to beat the long lines.

DSC_0002_3

THE CROWN JEWELS ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VISITS OF YOUR TRIP.  Then return to the free tour group and enjoy the guide who is always very, very informative and fun.  When the tour is over, be sure to visit the NORMAN CHAPEL,  the church where some of the wives of Henry VIII are buried, and the site of the public and royal executions.  Have your MICHELIN GUIDE with you for all the wonderful details.

DSC_0042

After a good visit to the Tower, take bus #15 to ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL.

DSC_0031

There are several eating places in the area, and I recommend a bowl of soup or a quick sandwich/drink before entering the cathedral.  For those who are able, I strongly urge you to climb to the LANTERN on the top of the dome for the most amazing views of London.  You will first arrive at the WHISPERING GALLERY and then up the stairs, through the walls of the dome–dome upon dome in the Michelangelo style–to the lantern.  For me, this is one of the most amazing moments of any trip.  When you come down and visit the main floor, be sure not to miss the vaults below and the window behind the ALTAR where the seal of every USA state is found–a memorial to American service men in World War II.  Walk or take the bus to TRAFALGAR SQUARE and admire NELSON’S COLUMN and the lovely facade of the NATIONAL GALLERY.  Spend the afternoon in the Gallery.  (Option:  THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY)

Whitehall_sketch_mapc7T4jo

As you walk up the stairs to go into the NATIONAL GALLERY, get your camera ready for the amazing view from the balcony, over TRAFALGAR SQUARE and NELSON’S COLUMN down WHITEHALL to BIG BEN.  This is my favorite London view.

Craig Court 024

Good places to eat in the area is CHANDOS PUB and the VAULT OF ST. MARTIN-in-the-Field.  Before leaving the area, be sure you visit ST. MARTIN’s Church where many of our Patriots attended services before the Revolutionary War.  The Church’s design will be familiar to visitors as most of the churches in North America follow this architecture pattern including NORTH CHURCH, Boston.  Return to your flat, have a warm drink and a snack, and fall asleep watching British television.

Day 4:  Take a tube ride to WESTMINSTER TUBE STATION.  When you come out of the station, you will see BIG BEN in front of you and Westminster Bridge to your left.  You will see the river boats which take visitors down the River Thames to Greenwich.  It is a great ride.  WATCH OUT FOR THE NASTY PICK-POCKETS–this is their favorite place!  The ride down the river is enjoyable, and the town of Greenwich is interesting.  Visit the CUTTY SARK, the QUEEN’S HOUSE, and the Royal Naval Museum.

DSC_0030

Have a lunch in Greenwich and return to Central London.

DSC_0002

Walk over to the LONDON EYE, and hopefully, there will be short lines.    Grab a cab to the QUEEN’S GALLERY at BUCKINGHAM PALACE  and enjoy the current exhibition.

DSC_0189

I would not do a theatre this night;  you will be thoroughly exhausted.  Rather, I would wander around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square for lots of London laughs.  Sleep well.  You will need the rest.

Day 5:  Take a day trip to WINDSOR CASTLE after a good breakfast in the flat or a fabulous breakfast at VALERIE PATISSERIE.

DSC_0036

Take a cab to PADDINGTON STATION and purchase your round-trip ticket to Windsor.  You will change trains at Slough.  Don’t let that worry you.  Everyone on the train will hop off the train at Slough, and just follow the crowd.  Walk to the castle entrance past the massive walls of this fortification dating back to William the Conqueror.

DSC_0102

ENJOY THE STATE APARTMENTS.  Off season visits usually allow entrance into the Red, Green Drawing Rooms and the State Dining Room in the semi-private apartments.  Don’t rush.  There is a free electronic guide to improve your visit.  Also, I would recommend a visit to the ROYAL MEWS near the Castle where the Queen keeps some of her carriages.  Return to London and enjoy a short sleep before going to the theatre.  (OPTIONS:  Borough Market, the HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT, OXFORD by train, London Paddington to Salisbury to see the Cathedral, taxi from Salisbury station to Stonehenge, return to Salisbury and train to Bath–a long day)

DSC_0024

Be sure you collect your tickets an hour before the show starts, and perhaps have a pre-theatre meal in one of the little restaurants near the theatre.  Restaurants are all over Covent Gardens, and the food is usually very good.  Lots of Indian and oriental restaurants.

Day 6:  You will be tuned in by now, and London transporation and restaurants will be “old hat.”  If this is MUSEUM DAY, I would first visit the BRITISH MUSEUM to see the ELGIN MARBLES, the ROSETTA STONE, on and on.  Take your Michelin Guide with you and pick out the items in the Museum you want to see for sure.  I would take a cab from the BRITISH MUSEUM to THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM in South Kensington. Have LUNCH in the dining room–it is buffet and the DINING ROOM is ***SPECTACULAR*** AND MUST NOT BE MISSED.

DSC_0127

DSC_0124

The food is wonderful;  I have BEEF WELLINGTON, and it is always superb. Again, have your MICHELIN GUIDE with you to choose the exhibition rooms you wish to see for sure.  I would choose a local restaurant/pub, and just hang out to relax after this very busy day.  THIS IS SERENDIPITY EVENING.  (OPTION:  Natural History Museum)

DAY 7:  This is the day for an OUTSIDE-LONDON experience.  From April to October, my favorite day-out-of-London visit is to QUEEN VICTORIA’S home at OSBORNE HOUSE on the Isle of Wight.

800px-Osborne_House_

Take a cab to WATERLOO STATION and purchase your ticket and return to the ISLE OF WIGHT/Ryde for a visit to Osborne House.  The getleman at the ticket window will help you.  The train rolls along through beautiful English countryside to Portsmouth.  Stay on the train until it stops at Portsmouth Harbor, the end of the line–follow the other travelers as they are all probably going where you are going.  Leave the train and jump on the SEA LINK which is the ferry which will take you to the small town of Ryde on the ISLE OF WIGHT.  Have fish and chips in Ryde , and then ask a local which bus to take to OSBORNE HOUSE–everyone is very helpful.  It is a  short ride until the driver  will tell you where to get off.  When you walk through the gates of PRINCE ALBERT’S FAVORITE VILLA–his dream creation in the Italian style–you will experience one of the most amazing visits you can imagine.  You will be guided to the “State Rooms” and then you will visit Prince Albert’s DRESSING ROOM and BATH and then Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s lounge where their two desks are placed next together as they always were during the lives.  The family memorabilia is intriguing and very interesting.  Then you will visit the Queen’s dressing room with a magnificent Minton china mirror and toilette, her shower, and her loo–all nicely tucked behind beautiful mahogany doors.  You will then enter the Queen and Prince Albert’s bedroom.  THIS IS REALLY HISTORY.  Queen Victoria died in this room, and it has been preserved for curious generations to come.  For me, this is one of the great highlights of a visit to the UK.  When you are finished with the house visit, wander in the gardens and through the Durbar Room.  Return to London after the most wonderful day.

Day 8:  This is your last day in London.  The MUST-DO visit for today is WESTMINSTER ABBEY.

westminster_abbey_night

Again take your MICHELIN GUIDE and wander through the Abbey just soaking in all the history, tradition, architecture,  and music (if the organ is playing).  For me, I would take the afternoon off and do a bit of shopping and spend the later part of my day at the WALLACE COLLECTION with exhibits of the finest pieces of 18th century decorative art–Sevres.

DSC_0122

FABULOUS.  Then home to pack, making sure I have all my documents on my person and NOT IN THE SUITCASE. (OPTION:  RULES RESTAURANT – Maiden Lane, Covent Garden reservations 020 78365314  FABULOUS!)

Day 9:  Depart the flat 3 1/2 hours  before departure time from either Heathrow or Gatwick.  I prefer to have spare time JUST IN CASE…….

THE GEOGRAPHICAL CENTER OF LONDON

Filed under: London Connection — tmooresr @ 11:47 am

When people contact our offices here at the LONDON CONNECTION, they often say that they want a flat RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING.  Well, I began thinking to myself:  WHERE IS THE CENTER OF LONDON.  Well, I found out.

charlesIback

The GEOGRAPHICAL CENTER OF LONDON is on TRAFALGAR SQUARE.  At the bottom, south end, of Trafalgar Square, looking down Whitehall, there is an original 17th century equestrian monument to KING CHARLES I.  How it survived in Cromwellian times is quite a story.  If you walk to the royal statue and book behind the monument, there is a plaque which states that this plaque marks the spot where the original Charing Cross once stood.  The original CHARING CROSS had disappeared long ago, but in Victorian times a copy of the original CROSS was placed in front of CHARING CROSS TRAIN STATION, a bit down the street.

timthumb

THIS PLAQUE IS THE REFERENCE POINT FROM WHICH ALL DISTANCES FROM LONDON ARE CALCULATED.  These measurements are not mentioned on the PLAQUE, but this is in fact the GEOGRAPHICAL CENTER OF LONDON.

I therefore conclude that those who want to stay in a flat in the midst of everything are saying they want to stay in Covent Garden where the theatre, restaurants, clubs, shops, wine bars, movies, traffic, and noisy visitors are flourishing.  FOR ME, THIS IS THE CENTER OF LONDON AND CERTAINLY THE CENTER OF MY LIFE WHILE I AM IN LONDON.

If this is where you want to be during your stay in London, check out our flats on St. Martin’s Lane, Upper St. Martins, and Charing Cross Rd.  THEY ARE IN THE MIDST OF EVERYTHING in the heart of Covent Garden.  I love to be there.

THE NEW LONDON CAB

I am 6’1″ tall, and the regular London cab causes me problems.  I love the “black cab” of London;  they are certainly part of the atmosphere of the city.  I have been in the back of a BLACK CAB for much of my life.  I have no scars, but I have twisted and bumped many times getting in and out.  No one seems to mind–It is just London and the way it is!

But, let me introduce you again to our driver DAVID NORMAN who we feel is the best taxi driver in London.  He picks up our clients at the airport and returns them in perfect time for their return flights home.

DSC_0101

We send out FEEDBACK LETTERS to all our clients as they return home.  Almost everyone mentions DAVID NORMAN, his manners, his skill, AND HIS CAB.  Let me tell you about David’s cab.

For many years, David drove the “usual” London cab.  When he came to work with our company, he bought the new MERCEDES BLACK CAB.  When he told me he was going to do this, my heart skipped a beat. But, let me tell you about our clients’s response.

They report is that the new cab is larger, more comfortable, and has much more head room.  The side doors slide open rather than swing open.  It is simply a more luxurious ride.

DSC_0014

I just wanted to introduce you to our driver David Norman, but also to his new cab which will be a great contribution to the smooth arrival of our visitors, arriving tired and a bit confused at Heathrow or Gatwick.

David is a classy fellow, and so is his cab.  You will enjoy him.

Thanks,

Thomas Moore

OUR BEAUTIFUL FLAT IN CRANLEY PLACE – Ready for your visit.

The London Connection is always pleased to announce the addition of another fantastic flat for our visitors to London.  Since the beginning of our company 30 years ago, we have successfully offered 4,035 different flats.  Flats come to us by recommendations from owners to new owners, so we are able to bypass commercial means of obtaining properties.  We offer a flat in Knightsbridge that we have had for 25 consecutive years and three owners and four refurbishments.

1-33reception

We are pleased to offer a very lovely one bedroom flat in CRANLEY PLACE next to Christie’s South Kensington.  We have been offering a fabulous 2-bedroom flat in Beaufort Gardens that belongs to this same owner.  Now, for several months a year, we have the owner’s one bedroom flat–while she is in Australia.  It is always available in the spring and during June, July, and August.  It will also be available from 15 December until into the new year.   So, book early as this will be a popular flat.  Let me tell you about this fantastic property.

CRANLEY PLACE is a very beautiful South Kensington street–white period buildings, tree lined, and like a picture postcard.  It is three minutes to the South Kensington tube station, and there are taxis everywhere.  Cranley place is off the Old Brompton Road and a short walk to Onslow Square and Onslow Gardens in the direction of THE BOLTONS.  It is certainly one of the most elegant residential neighborhoods in London.

This elegant flat is on the second floor of one of these beautiful white period buildings.  There is a lovely stairway to the property as well as a lift.  The lounge is done in neutral colors with an elegant contemporary feel.  There is a dining area and a French door leading to the very comfortable balcony.  The beautiful sofa can be used as a pull out bed, but only after speaking with Mr. Thomas Moore Sr.  The kitchen is absolutely state of the art with fine machines, granite counters, and French doors which lead to the lovely patio.  The bedroom has a queen size bed, good storage, and lots of windows and light–dead quiet.  The bathroom is again state of the art with granite, glass, and fine chrome fixtures.  The tub has a power shower fixed in the tub–really fine quality.  The entire flat is an amazing property–very high standard.  A very famous British actor lives in the next flat along the balcony side.

When you arrive at this property, you sense the fine setting and environment you have chosen to stay for your business trip or holiday.  I can add that I would stay here without hesitation–it is just beautiful.  I walked down this street and in this area last year when the trees were in blossom;  it was MAGIC.

1-33bedroom

Have a good stay.

Thanks,

Mr. Thomas Moore III

THE LONDON CONNECTION’S GHOST RIDER

Filed under: London Connection — tmooresr @ 5:29 am

The LONDON CONNECTION’S GHOST RIDER is real.  He is not a fictional character from a comic book.  He is our unsung hero!!  Let me tell you about him and his job.

Our GHOST RIDER is the linen man.  Can you imagine the job which requires fresh linen in 50 flats where there are queen size beds, double beds, single beds, and pull-out sofas–EVERY FIVE DAYS?  Can you imagine transporting all this linen to all these properties through very thick/heavy London traffic?  Can you imagine all these deliveries after ten o’clock in the morning in the midst of London traffic so flats will have fresh linen for new arrivals eager to get into their accommodations after a long international flight–all before noon?  It is almost a magic show–and a show not to be missed.

Our GHOST RIDER has figured it all out.  He carefully studies the daily computer record which will tell him how many people are arriving to a property.  How many singles, doubles, queens–and the option to separate a king size bed into two twins–is always on his mind. AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF TOWELS.    All this work has to be done when no one sees him, after clients leave and before the new visitors arrive.  Often same-day turnarounds.

P1020793

THIS MAGICIAN IS LUIS.  How is it all achieved?  THE MOTORBIKE.  Luis turned his own garage into a linen vault where hundreds of sheets are sorted by size.  He reads the print-out for each booking, loads the linen into very large linen bags and ties the bags to the back of his motorbike  AND OFF HE GOES, flying through traffic wearing a helmet–in and out–straight to the flat that is being prepared.   Can’t you just imagine the scene in your mind’s eye!!  Ah, the GHOST RIDER!

Luis is the member of our team that everyone forgets to thank because his work is never seen.  He has done such a fantastic job over the years that we just assume the linen comes from somewhere but we have forgotten the magic of how it all just happens.

Luis is our un-sung hero, but he is not forgotten by me.  The linen has been the difficult part of our company for 30 years.  IT HAS BEEN A HEADACHE LIKE NO OTHER.    But when Luis came into the operation, all those worries went away.  Luis is a strong, dedicated, very hard working, mentally solid individual whose work is perfect.  He never seeks attention;  he just loves his job.  HE IS NOT REPLACEABLE.

If visitors to our flats feel inclined, please leave him a five pound tip with a note saying:  THANKS TO THE LINEN MAN-THE GHOST RIDER.  I know he would appreciate it.

He is fantastic and certainly our magician.

Thanks, Luis.

A successful trip to London has a lot to do with location, location.  Well, our new flat certainly fills the bill.  Rarely does a visitor to London have the opportunity to walk out his front door to find Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret’s Church just across the street–right next door. A FANTASTIC NEW FLAT ON CAMBRIDGE CIRCUS – LONDON

5050living

We at the London Connection / Connections Management are offering a great two bedroom flat at Cambridge Circus directly across the street from the theatre where LES MISERABLES played for years.  The location is ideal, and the flat is perfect for up to four persons wanting to be close to all the monuments, museums, theatres, and restaurants in central London.  PERFECT.   It will be available starting 1 August, 2010.  It will book fast, so don’t wait and be disappointed.

A visitor can walk from Cambridge Circus to Trafalgar in 5 minutes, Leicester Square in 3 minutes.  All the theaters of Covent Garden are no further than 8 minutes away.  Being this close to the theatres is wonderful because a taxi is not necessary after a play;  and those who go to theatre in London know how difficult it is to grab a taxi after a play.  Now, just walk home.  The tube station is Leicester Square which is on the Piccadily Line and goes straight through central London:  South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, etc..  It couldn’t be better.

The flat itself is very pleasant and  has very comfortable leather seating, wood floors, and good lighting in the lounge.  The kitchen has all machines including washer/dryer, fridge/freezer, microwave, stove and hob.  The master bedroom has a queen size bed with an en suite bathroom featuring shower, sink, and loo.  The second bedroom has a double bed with its own bathroom with shower over the tub, sink, and loo.

The flat is on the top floor of the building with an elevator.  When considering the quality, the location, and standard of the flat throughout, it is an ideal accommodation for visitors coming to London and desiring to be near all the destinations in central London.  It is really a wonderful property.  Highly recommended.

Our company THE LONDON CONNECTION / CONNECTIONS MANAGEMENT has added a fantastic flat to our offerings.  When the two flats were offered to us, I could hardly believe the location.  BOTH HAVE VIEWS OVER TRAFALGAR SQUARE WITH NELSON’S COLUMN dominating the views.  Location is always the key to success for a London stay, and this flat is absolutely in the middle of everything that draws visitors to London:  National Gallery, St. Martin in-the-fields, 10 Downing Street, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, Covent Garden and theatre district, and the National Portrait Gallery.  The tube station is Leicester Square.  Wow !

The flats are on the 2nd and 3rd floors with lift and incredible views.  The very nice lounges are beautifully finished in wonderful woods;  the windows are all Edwardian small panes.  Very comfortable seating.  One flat has two bedrooms with double beds in each,  and the second flat has three bedrooms (double bed, single bed, single bed).  All the bedrooms are nicely finished.

These beautiful properties are in an Edwardian building in the most amazing location.  For a visit to London for four persons, these are absolutely the most amazing flats. Four persons in each flat.

I have been letting private flats in London to visitors for 30 years.  It is my intent to arrange  the best flats in the best locations.  I love this work;  it is so rewarding.  I love the feed-back letters from clients who have had wonderful trips.  They all tell me about the restaurants they found–I post their discoveries on my blog and try them myself.  Check out our company website   www.londonconnection.com See what we have to offer.  You can email us at     sales@londonconnection.com   or call our office  888.393.9120.

HEAD OF HOUSEKEEPING – Meet Alice – Amazing Talent

DSC_0007

From time to time, a very talented person comes along who makes a real difference in a company’s operation.  Twelve years ago, a young lady came to us for a housekeeping position.  She was a single parent raising a young son and needed the job.  Immediately we recognized that this young lady would become a major player in our London operation.  She worked hard, caring for as many as five accommodations during a long, busy day.  When her son was not in school, he came with her and helped in small ways.  We grew to admire this young lady as she moved up the scale in our operation.

We listened to her team ladies speak lovingly about Alice.  They know she loves her work, cares about the company, and is always willing to help.  After twelve years, she is now head of housekeeping.  She knows every flat in detail:  hot water sources, heating sources, fuse switches, and all the other quirks in every flat.  She has become almost indispenable.

I am posting a picture of Alice, a group shot with Alice and her team, and a  ”crazy” photo of her to show you her wonderful personality.  She is really alive.

DSC_0115

Her son Ray is now a young man and assists her with her work.  Alice and Cristina are very close friends in their work.  You see them arm-in-arm as they leave a property after a major rearrangement of a flat.–laughing and skipping home.  Nice.

For those of you who will be in our flats or have been with us, I am sure you will appreciate the fabulous work this young lady does.  Alice’s warm Brazilian personaling exudes and makes hard work fun.  What would we do without her.

I hope you will appreciate her.  Her outstanding work will make a difference in your stay.

Thanks,

Tom

DSC_0130_3

This property is a beautifully redeveloped 1812 small warehouse .  Some original wood exists on one of the floors;  however, all the walls are glass.  The stairs over five floors are commercial steel, the walls are glass, the floors are stone and bleached oak.  It has three bedrooms over three floors, three bathrooms on three floors, a beautiful reception room covering one floor, and a fantastic open plan kitchen/lounge.  The  bedroom on the fifth floor has a glass ceiling/roof which mechanically opens up to the sky.

The kitchen is fitted with enamelled metal cabinets: fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, and loaded with cooking utensils.  It is absolutely amazing.

Rich furniture and fine antiques are found throughout, making this highly contemporary setting a rich home–warm and inviting, antiques and fine woods placed next glass and metal.  The stairways are lined with fine paintings, portraits, historical documents, flags, and beautiful family collections.

The rooms are large, the bedrooms are large and comfortable, and the bathrooms are stunning.  This is one of the most beautiful and well positioned properties imaginable for our guests.

THE LONDON CONNECTION’S TEAM

Sixteen hundred groups of London tourists and businessmen arrive to our London flats each year.  The quality of our operation depends on the most wonderful group of people which we call OUR TEAM.  Some are housekeepers, others are let-in/meeter-greeters, others take care of airport pick-ups.  This team works together day after day in 45 flats all over London.  They know the properties, and they are ready to assist our clients to become familiar with London.

DSC_0111

David Norman is CHIEF DRIVER.  He organizes all airport pick-ups and returns.  He has a team of drivers that meet clients at the Information Desk as they come through Her Majesty’s Customs.  David is a real gentleman, and you feel very secure in his capable hands.  This CHIEF DRIVER knows all the properties, has followed your flights on the computer, and alerts the let-in people once he has you in his cab.  BEING PICKED UP BY OUR DRIVERS IS THE PERFECT WAY TO BEGIN YOUR TRIP:  EVERYTHING IS PERFECTLY COORDINATED.  You can also organize your return with the driver on your ride into London to your flat.   (David’s contact number:  07904232782  (from North America:  011.44.7904232782)

DSC_0014

CRISTINA TEIXERA IS THE LONDON MANAGER.   This is one of the most talented people in this business–with a long history of experience.  She oversees all the operation.  She checks to see that your flat is ready:  heat, hot water, keys, etc..  CRISTINA is the subject of many wondereful letters to the London Connection;  she is just amazing.  And I have to say, we all love her very much.  You will also.  SHE IS THERE FOR ANY PROBLEM.  Contact Number:  07956583747  (from North America:  011.44.7956583747)

THE HOUSEKEEPERS  are the backbone of our operaton.  Each housekeeper is assigned a group of accommodations.  They know these flats in detail.  They know the mattresses, the flatware, the glasses, the linens, the fuse boxes.  Alice has been working for us for eleven years, and we depend on her.  When she goes on holiday, the team shutters because she is the veteran housekeeper who knows ALL the flats–even the ones beyond her assignment.  Conchita loves her flats, Riccardo takes care of the Mayfair flats, and even Maria the let-in lady has a few flats under her wing.  You all can imagine how much we depend on these great people.  THEY ARE A TREMENDOUS GROUP.

DSC_0106

THE MEETER-GREETER/THE LET-IN PEOPLE are our face to the public.  After the driver picks you up, the let-in lady meets you at the flat and shows you around.  They show you how the machines work and give you a tour around the accommodation.  They will also give you their contact numbers in case you need them during your visit.  They can also organize maid service if you require additional help.  The ladies you will meet are Vanessa, Liovy, and Maria.  If we become very busy on any given day, Cristina will jump in.

The member of the team you never see is Luis.  This is the linen man.  He delivers linens to all the flats.  He is like a phantom in the night.  He delivers all the linen on the his motorbike.  He zooms in and out of traffic with packages of white sheets, towels, and pillowcases tied to his bike.  He is an amazing guy:  strong, skilled, and always on time.  He has linen stored all over London ready to put in flats.  He is really like the miracle man:  dirty linen-bang! it’s gone.  Clean linen!  Bang!  It just magically appears.

These are the heart and soul of our operation in London.  We are like a family, and we love and care for these people.  They work long hours, and they take their job seriously. These people are professionals.  I love and appreciate these people very much.  Please appreciate them during your visit;  I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Tom

Our flat at Donne Place is a unique property for discerning guests.   Donne Place is a charming, small street of early 19th century houses, off Walton St. and Draycott Avenue.  This is an absolutely wonderful location.  The accommodation is one of the most beautiful properties we have ever offered.  It is “English” in every regard.  It is located moments from the South Kensington Tube Station on the Piccadilly Line which travels straight through the heart of London:  Knightsbridge (Harrods), Hyde Park, Green Park (Buckingham Palace), Trafalgar Square (theatre), Leicester Square (movie theaters and night life), Covent Garden (theatre and restaurants), and beyond.  It couldn’t be better located.  If you are interested in shopping, all the fine shops of Knightsbridge are moments away.  If you are interested in museums, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum are five minutes away.  Wonderful location.  Just wandering down Walton Street is a delight.  Grocery shopping and restaurants are everywhere.  This accommodation is a period house on three levels, finished to an amazing level.  It is filled with fine furniture, paintings, carpets, clocks and china.    It is unusual to have an opportunity to live in such surroundings for a short let.  It is a wonderful experience.  The lounge is very beautiful with a decorative fireplace, elegant furniture, and fine paintings.  It is decorated basically in white with gilt and fine old English wood joining together to create this rich and peaceful atmosphere.  The dining table for four persons is a lovely antique with fine Regency chairs.  It all overlooks a small garden.  The kitchen has all machines including washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer.  The second floor has a large double bedroom– a lovely room which has its own bathroom with shower over tub, basin, and loo.  There is also a small study on this floor.  The third floor has the master bedroom which is elegant and very comfortable.  It has a period Georgian canopy bed for two persons –good storage.  Enjoy the photos.  There is a second bathroom with shower, tub, wash hand basin, and loo.  This is truly and outstanding property in an outstanding location.  The position is very private and secluded while being immediate to all the transportation and best shopping in London.  amazing property.  If it is within your budget, this is the property to book.  Two week bookings required.

Buckingham Palace

Filed under: London Connection,The Royal Family — admin @ 8:26 am

DSC_0059Buckingham Palace is probably the most famous residence in the world.  It is certainly the most photographed building in London and perhaps in the world.  it has a dignified, elegant facade which has been the backdrop of some of the most dramatic scenes in history:  King George V and Queen Mary’s receiving the cheers of the British people at the end of World War I,    King George VI and Churchill declaring victory at the end of World War II,  the Balcony Scene after the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Celebration of the Queen’s 80th Birthday.  I was in London for the Queen’s 80th birthday and for the wedding of Diana and Charles.  The enthusiasm of the crowds will never be forgotten.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother when Queen Consort of King George VI was informed that plans were being organized for her and for the two princess–Elizabeth and Margaret Rose–to leave Buckingham Palace so spend the war years in Canada.  The Queen responded instantly:  ”The princesses will never leave without me;  I will never leave without the King, and the King will never leave.”  Because the safety of the Royal Family was essential for national morale, the Royal Family did spend their evenings at Windsor Castle and the King and Queen returned to Buckingham Palace each day.  The face of Buckingham Palace became a national symbol of survival.  The Germans made the King and Queen a target of the first order.  The Palace and the Royal Family survive, symbols more popular today than ever before.

DSC_0060
The history of the Palace is very interesting.  Originally, it was the residence of the Duke of Buckingham who sold the house mid-1700′s to King George III to be his unofficial residence where he could raise his growing family in an informal setting.  He added great libraries and orchards and trees.  Today the trees form the basis for Green Park, and the palace that we see today has as its foundation the original house.  The King’s son, George Prince of Wales, upon his father’s death, put the house in the hands of the great architect NASH who created one of the most splendid palaces in Europe.  The State Rooms with all the magnificent ceilings and floors and rugs, the huge Royal Collection of paintings-silver-Sevres-furniture, the finest collection of porcelain ever gathered– all create the most amazing setting where the Queen reigns but does not rule.

Queen Victoria after she married Prince Albert Prince Consort needed more bedrooms for her burgeoning family added the facade which we see today.  The great Nash Forecourt was closed in with this additional wing which was again faced in Portland stone during the reign of King George V about 1912 because the Caen stone was deteriorating.  I am posting a picture where you can see the old palace and the Victorian facade.  Very interesting.

This story of this palace  parallels English history;  it  is now open to the public during the months the Queen is not in residence. The Queen leaves for Balmoral in Scotland the first of July until the end of October.  During that period, the public is invited to view the State Rooms.  If you are in London during this period, this is one of the top five attractions for visitors.

ALSO, since the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 2002, The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall along with Prince William and Prince Harry have moved into Clarence.  The Queen Mother lived at Clarence since the death of King George VI.  Clarence House is a five-minute walk from Buckingham Palace.  It is also open for same period as is Buckingham Palace.  I get my ticket every summer and wander through this gorgeous house which has royal history since the early 1800′s when it was built for the second son of King George III.  The house is filled with fabulous paintings, furniture, and superb decorative items.  It is a friendly house, and one of the last houses run on the Victorian model in London.

One of the most fun aspects about a visit to Buckingham Place is a visit to the GIFT SHOP–open all year round.  Go the entrance of the QUEEN’S gallery on the south side of the palace and go directly into the shop.  You don’t have to go to the Queen’s Gallery; rather, you can go straight to the shop.  The items all have royal themes.  There is silver, porcelain, pillows, jewelry, on and on. Best place to buy a quality gift for friends of home.   You can even buy a dog’s bed in the shape of the Queen’s Tiara.  That’s a bit much, but fun nonetheless.   If you like reading royal biographies, here’s the place to buy one.

Tickets to both Buckingham Palace the Clarence House are available on the royal website.  I encourage you all to make these two royal residences a part of your visit to London.   There is a website for both residences which offers amazing details and history. Let me hear from you about your individual visits.  I am really interested.

Becky Hinze and the LONDON CONNECTION / CONNECTION MANAGEMENT office headquarters

Filed under: London Connection — admin @ 11:26 am

DSC_0006The phones never stop ringing in the the London Connection offices.  The phone number 801.393.9120 has been our contact number for over twenty years, and we have enjoyed receiving calls from current clients and clients who have worked with us for many years.  We get calls about everything imaginable.  Travelers want to know if there are hair dryers in the flats, what is the nearest tube station, what is the phone number of their accommodation in London, where do the clients meet the chauffeurs, have we received all their documents, can they switch their payments to another credit card, how do clients leave emergency contact numbers at home, what is the emergency contact number in London, what is the driver’s phone number, what is a good restaurant near the flat, is there a safe in the flat, is Buckingham Palace open during the winter, can the driver give a half day London orientation tour, how far is the flat from their friend’s address in London, how do they arrange returns to the airport, how early do they have to be to the airport before a flight, can they stay in the flat after 10:00 am, how often are the sheets and towels changed, do we have non-feather pillows, can they pay in sterling rather than in dollars, what is the current exchange rate, so we have a roll-away bed, do the master beds pull apart into two twins, what staples are in the flat, can they drink the london water, and so on.

The first thing to come to a client’s mind is to call our office.  We are of course always pleased to hear from clients;  it is our business.  When the phone rings here, usually it is Becky Hinze who picks up.  Over and over we hear what a pleasant voice and person–a very nice lady–helps them answer these questions.  There is simply no replacement for the right person on our phones. Becky is the voice that welcomes your questions and inquiries.  From time to time, the questions require a more detailed answer, so Becky nicely passes those calls to Thomas Jr. or to Thomas Sr. who do their best to match Becky’s lovely handling of clients’ concerns.

Becky has been at her desk in the office for four years.  During that time, she has learned to discuss particular flats with clients, do all the receipts, keep the files, check and balance the payments, and keep the airport pick-up reports absolutely up-to-date.  It is a job where attention to detail is absolutely essential.  She recognizes the red flags, and she has the eye than can spot a problem.

She is the most amazing employee.  She keeps a father and son– who own the company– on task.  She is so pleasant and eager to see that a visitor’s arrival and visit go smoothly without difficulties.   I am posting this profile and photos of Becky because I thought you would all enjoy seeing the person behind that wonderful voice.

I am also sending a few photos of our offices where we arrange your bookings in our properties.  It is an office, filled with wonderful memorabilia gathered over many years–that makes us feel like we are in London working with our London team.DSC_0022_2

I am sure you have enjoyed working with Becky Hinze.  Keep in touch with her;  she loves to communicate with clients of this company.

London Connection’s London Team – These are the people who make it happen

Filed under: London Connection — admin @ 9:39 am

When the driver brings visitors to a property for their London visit, THE LONDON CONNECTION makes every effort to make the flat perfect.  All our properties are private homes prepared for clients coming to London to live in an English setting.  Some of the properties are very modern, some are typically English with chintz and fine paintings, others are handsome- shabby- chic residences with years of history and beautiful family antiques, some of them are intentionally simple in style.  We offer about 45 properties which have to be cleaned, painted, carpeted, tiled, polished, and mechanically perfect.  The boilers have to work, and the ever-occurring burned out light bulbs have to be replaced.  The kitchen kettle fails–what would the English ever do without their tea?  Can you believe that the apartment above has a leaky pipe?–it happens–yes, all too often–AND in goes the plumber and the painter.  THE KILLER is the washer/dryer which baffles almost every North American who stays in a flat.  A washer and a dryer in the same machine is a mystery most Americans never figure out–without a lot of TLC.  Phone calls go back and forth asking how to open up the washer/dryer to get the clothes out only to learn that the door WILL NOT OPEN until the machine has completely finished its cycle.  Believe me, it takes a large team to keep all this going.  Twenty sheets, twenty towels, soap, paper towels–on and on– have to be delivered to the flat each week, and sometimes more often.  43 flats with 20 sheets and 20 towels weekly?  That’s a real job.  But, we have the perfect fellow named Luis who flies through London on his motorcycle dressed in black leather with bundles of towels packed behind him.  No one dares touch his towel office–his garage converted into a linen storage–or you will be given a full tour of the stacks of king/queen/double/single sheets, towels, and of course NO WASH CLOTHS.  This operation is a network of wonderful people who work all day together and then laugh and smile at the end of a very successful day with clients all snuggled in their beds, sleeping on clean sheets and bathing in perfect bathrooms using towels supplied by the team for their visits.  There are housekeepers, flat hostesses which we call let-in ladies, painters, and electricians.  One of our housekeepers has been working for us for ten years;  she knows every aspect of keeping these flats in great shape.  Other housekeepers fall by the wayside, exhausted from all the demands required to keep up the properties.  Theirs is a demanding job, and these housekeepers are real heroes.  We have added a man to the housekeeping team this year who is really helpful with heavy loads of linen and trash.  Welcome aboard, Carlos–great to have you!

The housekeeping team is made up of Conchita–fantastic lady,DSC_0008 Ricardo–a really helpful fellowDSC_0010, Alice–the veteran of the group.DSC_0007 The company manager Cristina is not far away with her critical eye, always making sure everything is working and cared for.  Note the pictures of this housekeeping staff whom you will meet as they come and go keeping your flat in great shape.  Amazing, they are smiling.

The flat hostesses or let-in ladies are your meeter-greeters.  They are the ones who extend a friendly hand and welcome you to London.  They realize you are suffering from jet lag and are DEAD TIRED, but they will make every effort to help you keep your eyes open as they orient you to the machines in the flat, tell you about the challenging washer/dryers, and explain the telephone. Several flats have alarms, so you will want to really pay attention to this or you will have the Metropolitan Police at your door. These lovely ladies will tell you about local transportation, restaurants, and shops.  They know the districts of London, and they will be eager to share this knowledge with their guests.  The hostesses will give you contact numbers in case you need to contact someone to help with this or that.  You will get a friendly and helpful voice on the other end of the phone.  Liovy, Vanessa, and MariaDSC_0012DSC_0011DSC_0015 will be the ladies you will meet.   They all live in central London and can walk to your flat in minutes if an emergency arises.  THE KEYS–OH MY GOODNESS, THE MANY KEYS TO ALL THESE FLATS!

And now Cristina. DSC_0014 Several years ago, we heard of this young lady from one of our clients who came to London every year to the same flat.  She was an American from Brentwood, California, and she was demanding, to say the least.  She always stayed in the same flat which was owned by a gentleman who lived in Rome and came to London only rarely.  He had this young lady and her husband as managers of his flat.  One afternoon, our California client called me from the flat in London and said:  THE LADY WHO RUNS THIS FLAT HAS EXECUTIVE TALENTS.  YOU SHOULD HAVE HER OVERSEEING YOUR OPERATION.  SHE IS REMARKABLE.  So, for a long period of time, I heard about this CRISTINA lady.  When our London manager Fay retired a couple of years ago, I knew immediately it was time to bring Cristina on board in a managerial position.  She had worked for a short-let company for several years and knew how it all works.  She knew the potential problems BUT BETTER, she knew how to solve them quickly.  She seemed to have a sense about boilers, computers, internet, plumbing, and spot removing.  She knew of excellent support staff people who were always thrilled to work with Cristina.  Almost overnight, she had the entire operation running like clockwork.  She seemed unflappable and had several immediate solutions.  She coordinates with the drivers for the arrivals, watches the landing schedules each morning, and sends out the let-in ladies–all as a matter of course.  In my twenty-five years in this business, I have never known a finer team partner than Cristina.  You will sense her organization and skills.  She is a problem solver and seems to have an immediate sense of solution.  Amazing person.

As I have reported in earlier blogs, we in our US office keep a close eye on what goes on in London.  Cristina reports almost daily, so we get a first-hand report.  Also, the US sends out a survey to every returning client for feedback to improve how we operate. We review those surveys with Cristina.  In two years, we have never had a complaint about Cristina and her team.  Of course we hear of small problems which happen–one off now and again–but almost everyone recognizes that these team players run a first rate operation.

The London Connection is run like a family business.  Our team members are like family.  The US office listens to their suggestions and attempts to assist in every way we can.  But these people are professionals and are on the front line every day.  I love to be in London with these people.  We gather in London’s Chinatown twice a year to eat, laugh, and EAT.  As I grow older and like to be with people I enjoy, there is no group I prefer more than these people.  We are like one mind.  If you start talking about something that happened, we hardly get through the story because everyone already knows the details–except me–and they all are in hysterics.  I have thought about John Steinbeck’s words in THE GRAPES OF WRATH:  ”Mankind has one soul, and anything that hurts  any aspect affects the whole.”  I have been fortunate with wonderful team players, but this is the finest group of people I have worked with in over twenty years.  They are great.  I asked Cristina about one of our housekeepers–Alice.  she said to me:  ”I love her–she is wonderful–we laugh a lot.”

I am happy our visitors are going to meet this group.  NOTHING JUST HAPPENS;  THIS OPERATION RIDES THE ON BACK OF STRONG, TALENTED PEOPLE.  I am glad you are going to meet them.  They are grateful you are coming to London in their care. Don’t forget the linen delivery man;  he is the phantom in the operation, but he is certainly there.   I love my friends, but I adore my London team.  We are of one heart.
