The last King of America, George III, kept a careful diary.  His diary entry for 4 July, 1776, said:  ”NOTHING OF IMPORTANCE HAPPENED TODAY”

Amazing how the King’s Court was so out-of-touch with the mood in the colonies.  The King considered Benjamin Franklin a nuisance.  When Mr. Franklin approached the King at Court in St. James’s Palace, the King turned his back.  Franklin was so infuriated, he became a determined Patriot.

Imagine:  NOTHING OF IMPORTANCE HAPPENED TODAY.   What a marvelous bit of trivia.  (of course communications were very slow in those days!)  http://www.londonconnection.com

  1. George III’s papers do not include a diary. The quotation is fictional; it originated on the TV series “The X Files.”

And just for historical note, it was not actually King George III whose actions caused the colonial rebellion… it was the British Parliment. It was also the subsequent reactions of the Parliment to the Declaration of Independence, and their staunch refusal to try and placate and pacify the colonists –as King George III tried very hard to do– which precipitated the Revolutionary War.
