ENGLISH NOBLEMEN AND THE GRAND TOURS

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, English gentlemen were sent to Europe to study the classical cultures–particularly to Italy.   These aristocratic families bought paintings, furniture, jewelry, antiquities and brought these collections back to England to furnish and decorate their lavish country estates and beautiful London homes.  My great grandfather bought a set of lava cameos, carved with recognizable profiles of DaVinci, Dante, Michelangelo, etc..  My grandmother inherited the set and kept it in a box which she bought in a London important shop about 1890.  The set includes a large necklace, a choker (currently being worn by my wife’s mother in Boston–only temporary!), a bracelet, and three pins, and a beautiful ring.  I thought my readers would like to see this bit of English history and items which remind us of a bygone era.

ORIGINAL GATES TO THE OLD GROSVENOR HOUSE SCREEN, PARK LANE, ARE NOW IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

This morning, I put together an article about OLD GROSVENOR HOUSE, once the residence of the Marquis of Westminster and Dukes of Westminster, before it was torn down for the Grosvenor Hotel.  The magnificent gates which were attached to the Grosvenor House SCREEN were purchased at the time of demotion and ended up in Sydney, Australia.  Read this;  it is quite good fun!

HENRY VIII’S PETITION REQUESTING A DIVORCE FROM ANNE BOLEYN — One of the great documents of history!

Mrs. Moore and I have been watching the movie THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL with Eric Bana, Natalie Portman, and Scarlett Johansson as a change of pace from our Palm Springs busy days.  While watching this movie, I remember an amazing document very much connected to this movie.  This Henry VIII’s petition to the Pope requesting a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, with the seals of the Great Lords of England supporting the King’s claim.  It is certainly one of the great documents of history.  The King’s decision would change the course of history forever:  the Church of England and the Protestant movement in Britain.

LONDON’S HISTORY RECORDED WITH BLUE PLAQUES TO MARK THE SPOT WHERE PEOPLE LIVED, WHERE EVENTS OCCURRED, AND WHERE BUILDINGS ONCE STOOD

Filed under: BRITISH HISTORY — tmooresr @ 12:14 pm

As I have written throughout my blog, I love to wander and wander all over London.  When I leave our London home, often I have no idea where I am going.  I am rarely a man with a “destination” but rather a man with a “discovery.”  I walk down one street and up another with camera in hand–just taking in the beauty and happenings of this magnificent city.  I find wonderful neighborhood shops, restaurants, magazine stores, and unknown pubs for a warm pub lunch.  I enjoy this kind of venture best in the winter when I am bundled up with umbrella nearby because there is a wet atmosphere about London that makes for beautiful pictures, and people seem not to be in such a hurry.  I am 70 years old now, and I have been carrying on like this for most of my life;  during these forays, I encounter blue plaques on the houses and buildings as I pass by, and I stop and take a picture and recall the person’s life which had such an influence on British society and history.  I leave for London next week to spend January working with our London Connection team, and I assure you I have my warm coat, umbrella, camera, and old brown leather shoes all ready to go. Believe me, I will be looking for the blue plaques wherever I find myself.  It is like taking a walkand wandering through a history book.
