This afternoon, I was walking down the Strand on the way to St. Paul’s Cathedral and turned up a side street to get a pastry at Paul’s. I suddenly noticed an electric car charging at the power point. I was fascinated and decided to talk to the owner who had just plugged in. He told me that the car is perfect for him, and there is a lot of progress on the part of the City of London to offer the charging stations. I also learned that one can drive from London to Edinburgh with one charge in York which has just been installed. I wanted to post these photos because I think London is farsighted in this effort. I have seen one other car at a charge point and that was on Berkeley Square in front of Lloyd’s Bank.
Lots to think about here.

London’s PEARLY KINGS AND QUEENS were out in force yesterday gathering donations for their London charities. I saw them in Covent Garden and in Jubilee Market. Each Pearly King and Queen had the container for contributions and were greeting passers-by with big smiles and hopeful gestures. I stopped to talk to a Pearly husband and wife who told me that their charity organization was founded in the 19th century by one single person who was a street vendor and wore pearl buttons on the seams of his clothing which started the tradition of covering their clothes with all kinds of items, but all mother-of-pearl like the buttons of their founder. It was an effort of working class people to help those in need.
While I was having my chat, almost every person who walked by put a few coins in the container and wished the Pearlies well. I was touched and was eager to hear more about the service they give to the poor and wanting charities in London. The philanthropic efforts of the Pearlies, the charity efforts of the many churches, the immense charity causes of the Prince of Wales and the Queen, the magnanimous efforts of Princess Anne, and now the charity efforts of Prince Harry and Prince William all come together to provide care and interest in ways the government cannot provide. As I looked into their aging faces, there was a sweetness which I think comes from loving care for others.
I asked one of the Pearly Kings if he was coming to Prince William’s wedding. His answer was wonderful! ”I AND MY MRS ARE COMING IN OUR CART AND DONKEY. It is going to be a nice celebration for the country to see married two people in love.” What a contrast to the nasty articles in the INDEPENDENT by some hollow journalist who thrives on chewing nails! And whose only charity is himself–ay, nasty! Pearlies, you were a breath of fresh air. Thanks from a loyal supporter, and I look forward to the next time I see you with your contribution pouch.
Another layer of London society. I have been talking about these layers for months now. They just keep coming, layer after layer. Absolutely fantastic!

While the world waits for an announcement, these lovely young people live their lives in somewhat tranquil circumstances. These images gave the press and photographers the photo opportunity they wanted to see this couple together. They are attending a wedding of a friend, Harry Meade, in Gloucestershire.
I thought you would enjoy seeing these photograph.

QUEEN VICTORIA did not llike to have her picture taken. She never smiled, and she did not like to look straight into the camera. When I found this amazing 1890 image, I had to share it with my wonderful readers. I knew your would enjoy seeing it. They named an AGE after this Queen, and I think you can sense why. Wow! What a photograph.
If any of my readers run into these kinds of wonderful photographs about English history, send them on. I will post them.
Enjoy.

Several years ago, Mrs Moore and I went to France to teach at the University of Grenoble. In fact, it was the year of the Winter Olympics. We lived in Uriage and returned to the States only because we were expecting our first of five children. While there, we took an excursion with several university students to see the beaches of the Normandy Invasion. Actually, the real reason we went on this excursion was to escort a young lady and her student friends to Normandy to see her oldest brother’s grave who was killed in the June 6, 1944 landing at Omaha Beach in the first wave of men in the 16th Infantry. I will never forget what I saw when we arrived at the cemetery with the rows upon rows of white crosses. I got out of our car and stood there unable to speak. It was on this occasion that I first heard the name BOB CAPA. Our guide told us the history of Omaha and Utah Beaches and showed us plastic covered copies of pictures which she called THE MAGNIFICENT ELEVEN. Wow!
Britain had given its all in the Battle of Britain and endured hardships we can hardly imagine. I keep thinking of those images this guide showed our little group. This morning, I ran into them again while I was doing research on the internet about black and white photography. I said to myself: TODAY IS THE DAY. TODAY IS THE DAY TO POST THE PICTURES FROM THE MAGNIFICENT ELEVEN as well as other pictures from the first few days after the invasion.
Well, who was Bob Capa? Bob Capa was an Hungarian young man who went to Germany looking for work. As Nazi Germany became more and more aggressive, Capa moved to France, England, and finally to the United States. He became a photo journalist and recorded some of the most powerful images from the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and later conflicts. THE MAGNIFICENT ELEVEN are the 11 photos he was able to salvage from several rolls of film which were destroyed by mistake in London within hours after the NORMANDY INVASION. These images he took while he was with the troops landing on Omaha Beach–they are the real thing. Without doubt, they are some of the most significant moments caught on film during this victorious day of carnage.
Let me post several photos from Omaha Beach as well as photos from the first days of the invasion. They are absolutely fascinating. The invasion left from Dorset, Weymouth–all along that part of the English coast. These photographs are amazing, and I wanted to share them with you.
We must not forget! When you are walking down WHITEHALL in London, tip your hat as you walk past CENOTAPH. Yes, IN GRATITUDE. From now on, when I walk by, I will remember the images of BOB CAPA whose photographs recorded an incredible day in the history of the Free World.
Amazing! This is an image of the second day as the heavier equipment arrives

Jasper Conran’s COUNTRY is unlike any lifestyle book you’ve ever seen. It is neither a catalog of perfectly decorated spaces nor a how-to compendium of design problems and solutions. Rather, it is a deeply moving vision of the pleasures of countrylife and an intensely felt celebration in pictures and text of all things rural–the landscapes, the people, the houses, the traditions.
Conran uses his own experiences, and the landscapes and homes that are familiar to him to portray a seductive way of life. Moving from one season to the next, from interior to exterior, from detail to landscape, COUNTRY documents life as it is actually lived in the English countryside today. Stunning photographs and Conran’s poetic words captive the senses and the imagination, from the sweep of a beautiful landscape, to the warmth of an open fire, and from the smell of freshly baked bread to the quirkiness of local events. It is not a book to refer to for help or advice on this project or that. It is a book to spend a good long time with as you weave your dreams for that universally desired life–one lived well, IN THE COUNTRY.
In Jasper Conran’s words: ”Our world is being transformed, not just by globalization but by urbanization, too. For the first time in history, more people live in towns and cities than in the countryside. Across the globe we are forgetting our rural roots, but I believe that country life, its values, and peoples have never had more to offer.”
Who is JASPER CONRAN? Conran is an internationallly successful fashion designer with a brand recognized all over the world. He also designs crystal and china for Wedgewood, housewares, accessories, jewelry, funiture, and interiors. He has also designed costumes and sets for ballet, opera, theater, and film. His work has been recognized with awards including BRITISH DESIGNER OF THE YEAR, THE FASHION GROUP OF AMERICA AWARD, and THE LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARD FOR COSTUME DESIGN. In 2008 Jasper was appointed OFFICER OF THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE by HM The Queen.
Please excuse my poor photos of some of the pages from COUNTRY. It is a sin to post such awful pictures about a picture book, but I wanted the pictures to appear like images from a book. This is a fabulous publication. I have row after row of books of beautiful country houses–all beautiful and exquiste. But, this book fills a hole in my library: LIVING IN THIS PICTURESQUE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE. These images highlight the most cherished settings as they breathe, live, and enrich our often monotonous, sterile lives.
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS PUBLICATION. I recommend it for sure.
