Today, I thought about organizing a CLUB for some of my favorite friends to discuss everything and anything EXCEPT politics and religion (except for the Jews, the Mormons, the Moslems, and the Catholics). I thought travel, literature, concerts, art shows, book reviews, humor, architecture, cinema, antiques, fashion, gardening, and theater would be the perfect interests for this club. I think we should name it THE OCTAVIAN just to keep things on a humble note. We could , however, name it THE TARQUIN after Lawrence Olivier’s son who wasn’t quite so famous as his father–just to be a bit more modest. Perhaps it should be called the HEARTS OF THE WORLD honoring Lillian Gish’s early movie. Perhaps it could be called THE NIKKE CLUB after my mother’s club of her best friends where no one was allowed to tell the truth because the society ladies fibbed or exaggerated anyway, so my mother made fibbing mandatory. She used to say that anyone call tell the truth, but someone who can tell a fabulous Fib interested her! For years, if one of her friends suspected a untruth in their social circle, they would say: AH, YOU HEARD THAT AT DOTTY’S PARTY. I think the members should be arrogant, accomplished, and avid gardeners with particular interest in perennials–let’s say lillies. We should be above politics, and the word WASHINGTON should be disallowed–as well as a few others. No one younger than 50 should be permitted membership, and the honorary Caesar or Caesaress of the the CLUB should be the oldest member of the group who should be paid with a theater ticket to the best movie of the year. The Club should meet 6 times a year with grand fanfare and stunning dining. HER MAJESTY QUEEN MARY (deceased in 1951) should be our honorary PATRON.
ESTO PERPETUA must be out motto. Hm! Well, I think it would be a great idea and lots of fun.
In the 18th century, THE CLUB or the LITERARY CLUB was just such an enterprise. JOSHUA REYNOLDS was its first president, and it has grown to be one of England’s most eminent private clubs, even today. Winston Churchill was refused membership because he was deemed too controversial and political. So, the greatest man of the 20th century started THE OTHER CLUB.
I thought you would like read about THE CLUB.

Several people who are staying in London have asked about bars and clubs where they can relax and entertain friends. Asking me about bars and clubs is like asking me where to find a thread and needle shop in Ankara. I am no good at a bar; I don’t drink, and I get very sleepy and fall asleep every time I go with friends who enjoy bar life in the evening/night. But I realize many of the clubs have great music and excellent food. I am just not the guy who will have first hand experience. I was talking to one of our clients this afternoon who said there was a mini-website where there is a list of clubs and bars–and he knows most of them. He suggested these recommendations as a good start for people who enjoy clubbing. Check it out and let me know. Have fun! Hm, I wold prefer sitting at an outdoor cafe reading David McCullough’s GREATER JOURNEY, AMERICANS IN PARIS.
