A lady in the 18th century was never without her fan. They remain with us in wonderful collections in private collections and great museums. Some of the finest examples are in the Royal Collection which include Faberge fans bought by Queen Alexandra as gifs for Queen Mary and several fans once in the collection of Queen Victoria. I thought I would put up some images of fans which are in private English collections which highlight this exquisite art form. During the 19th century, the decorators were often became well known 19th century Impressionist artists. My wife inherited a collection of 57 flags which were gathered by the Wattis family over 200 years. I posted their images on this blog 19 February 2012. We treasure them and care for them–fragile as they are.

Last year, Mrs. Moore and I were attending a concert at St. Martin-in- the- Fields. I was reading the program notes when an elderly gentleman sat in front of me–wearing a ROYAL STUART PLAID sport coat. He was conspicuous, but he didn’t care; and the rest of us enjoyed the evening more because of the gentleman’s jacket. Sounds funny, but it is true. Over the past year, I have been thinking about that jacket. I contacted my tailor Kirk Chugg to see how much fabric I would need to bring home, and we made plans for creation of a ROYAL STUART PLAID sport coat. I went everywhere in London I could think of trying to find Scottish plaid fabric. Finally, my friend Lady Jessel told me to go to a shop on Regent Street which looks like a “tourist trap,” and the brothers who own the shop have the very best bolts of fabric. So, I began my search–sure enough, I found EXCELLENCE OF LONDON, Fine Scottish and English Woolens, 61 Regent Street, London W1 Telephone 01712871832. At first, I didn’t like the owner very much–a bit pushy for my taste–but eventually we got on the same page and had a great time. I decided that life is no rehearsal–I needed an excuse–so I decided that I would have three sport jackets in three different fabrics: Royal Stuart (red), Royal Stuart Night Watch (deep green), and a tweed “hounds tooth.” The shop keeper threw on three badges just to jazz up the coats, and I began to “wag my tail” just like our dog Rosie does at home when he gets a new bone. I know that this is quite a saga over fabric, but it was so much fun. Hey Guys, get some fabric and have your tailor make a jacket for you when you arrive back home. You will be the hit of the holiday parties! So much fun, eh? I knew I had to act fast or my friend Bill Hughes would have a ROYAL STUART PLAID BLAZER before I did, and I was going to see that that didn’t happen.

I have always wanted to have a sports coat in the ROYAL STUART PLAID. I have been to Harrods, Liberty, Selfridges, and to several tailors, but I have not been able to find anyone who has ROYAL STUART DRESS PLAID fabric– that REALLY RED TARTAN–enough yardage to have a sports coat made. Well, I found what I have been looking for this morning in a SCOTTISH SHOP on Regent Street, just a few shops up from Piccadilly Circus. I will be at their shop door at 9:00 tomorrow morning when the shop is open. I am really, really excited. Look at this! Now watch! All my friends will have to have one including Sir Lord William Hughes! Oh well, it will be like dressing up for Christmas. Bill, you are allowed!
I am really excited about this project! A sports coat in the ROYAL STUART PLAID; how can it be better?

VOGUE MAGAZINE has been making every effort to put THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE on the cover of the fashion magazine. I don’t think Prince Harry or the Duchess are interested whatsoever. We’ll see! I can’t see harry on the cover, and I think the Duchess is smarter than that. Vogue? Why would they?

The Kashden family are friends of our family. They have had pewter and fine antiques on Portobello Road for over 40 years. They deal with the finest quality merchandise. I have bought many fine items over the past years, and I am thrilled with the quality. During the past year, I have come to know their daughter Laura Kashden who deals in fine, exotic skin HANDBAGS. I bought a beautiful vintage crocodile bag while in London last month, and I have just purchased the bag pictured at the top of this article. There has been serious criticism about the changing quality of Portobello Road–and I have been very vocal–but Laura and her mother Hilary are professional dealers. I know that most of my readers visit PORTOBELLO ROAD during their stay in London, and I would like to introduce these two fine ladies who are the best of the best in London antique markets. THEY ARE A LEGEND. I am letting Laura speak for herself about her business. Look at images of her merchandise. Amazing.
