In January, I met up with my friends the Kashdens at GREEN VALLEY, an amazing Palestinian Market on Upper Berkeley Street. I love Baklava in all its variations: nuts, dates, on and on. I was thrilled to run into this market. It is paradise. I certainly recommend the experience to our London visitors.

On my home from church this morning, an elderly lady asked if I had ever tasted a Chocolate Cookie Cake. She said LIKE PRINCE WILLIAM’S CAKE. I said I have seen pictures, but I have never tried a chocolate cookie cake. I said I would find out. She is English and VERY ENGLISH, for sure. Well here it is:

My father introduced me to Olvera Street in Los Angeles when I was a child. My mother only tolerated Mexican food, but my father? He loved it. I was born in the White Memorial Hospital, and we drove from San Marino to Olvera Street just to eat THE VERY BEST TAQUITOS you have ever tasted. Come rain or shine, I went to CIELITO LINDO for three taquitos and that heavenly avocado green sauce. In fact, I often dream about them. Olvera Street has changed little during my lifetime; even my own children go straight to this oldest Los Angeles Street for taquitos, to be found NOwhere else that taste like these. Here is Olvera Street, Los Angeles’ oldest street and home of the famous CIELITO LINDO TAQUITOS. Stephanie and I could eat them all day long.

FINALLY! I grew up in Southern California; and as a child, Mexican food is what I loved most of all. At home, we had typical English meals such as roast beat and Yorkshire pudding, on and on. But outside with my friends, we thrived on Mexican food. After church on Sunday morning, my brother and I urged our parents to let us have Sunday dinner at El Poche’s Restaurant on Mission Road in San Gabriel. My mother preferred Sunday dinner at the Huntington Hotel in San Marino, but my brother and I kept up the pressure until the car headed down Mission Road passed the San Gabriel Mission to El Poche’s where we enjoyed the finest Mexican lunches and dinners. When I am in London, I wander around Covent Garden looking for a good Mexican restaurant; there are a couple, but they have no resemblance to the Mexican food I knew in California as a child prepared by local Mexican families.
Well, today all that changed. Our friends who spend winters in Rancho Mirage suggested that Stephanie I try a real Mexican restaurant in Cathedral City which they have enjoyed for years. Well, today was the day. We arrived at El Gallito Mexican Restaurant for lunch and were surprised to find a tiny ancient building in the middle of nowhere–all the little Mexican village had been torn down except this one very “Mexican” hut. Down the road, there were cars, one after another so I knew something wonderful was inside. I WAS DEAD RIGHT. We ordered tostadas, chile rellenos, beef tacos, cheese enchiladas, chile verde, beans and rice. The chips and salsa told us that we were in for a really fine, real Mexican dinner. We were right!
If you are in the Palm Springs area for any period of time, ignore the Mexican restaurants located all over the valley, and find El Gallito’s in the middle of nowhere in Cathedral City. It is wonderful. I mean, it is wonderful. Yummy, Yummy!

Years ago, I learned that the best place to meet the locals is at the local sandwich shops and pubs. Today, Cristina and I had lunch in a “local” where all the local workers came in for Shepherd’s Pie or lasagna or egg salad sandwiches. I could have sat with my wonderful meal and listened to the most marvelous accents. I go to Rules, the Savoy, and other famous places, but I never enjoy myself as much as I do when being with “just Londoners.” A full English breakfast in the local shops where the same locals read the morning papers with a cup of tea and catch up on local news is the very best way to have a great morning experience. Just open the door, sit next to an old timer, and you will learn more about local London that you can image. I love it very much. It is very much like going to pubs in the afternoon and evening! Fun, oh my goodness, fun.
