THE MAGIC CAVE at Covent Garden— Neil Henry and his fun “tricks”

My plan for today was church in the morning and wandering in Hyde Park in the afternoon.  Well, church was enjoyable in the morning, but the afternoon activities had to be redesigned because IT IS POURING RAIN in London.  You would think it is April.  So, I decided to go to the TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM in Covent Garden.  Before I went to the museum, I ran into THE MAGIC CAVE which is a stall operated by NEIL HENRY, the “magic” man.  He demonstrates several of his magic tricks which can be purchased in his stall.  He is the perfect personality for selling these magic tricks:  smiles, tricks, friendliness, and interest in those who at his stall.  I watched NEIL charm the socks off several young people who saw that these tricks would be fun with their friends.  He became one of the groups, enjoying the fun times with his MAGIC.  Check him out.  He is a great guy.  NEIL HENRY, 07815 082857  magicneil@hotmail.com   Twitter@magicneil     This is a fun guy.  His visitors eat him up.

Neil is a real gentleman.  I watched the people at his stall;  they really enjoyed him.

Nice.  Certainly worth a visit.

The “MAGIC MAN” in Covent Garden

Filed under: Give a party — tmooresr @ 1:54 am

Once or twice a week, the “magic man” has his stall in Covent Garden.  He is usually on the east side of the Piazza, and his little cart is surrounded by families and fascinated young people.  Five young people are all eyes and ears as the Magic Man shows them tricks he is happy to teach them.  It is the happiest spot!  When I see the Magic Man selling his tricks, I always walk over and enjoy the scene.  Puppet and Magic Shows have always been a part of London street life, and that tradition lives on in many parts of London but particularly  in Covent Garden.  If you see the Magic Man, stop by and have a giggle.  You will love watching the young people.  Really fun.

THE CHELSEA CAKE SHOP

Filed under: Give a party — tmooresr @ 11:52 pm

Yesterday, I had lunch with a friend at the Sloane Club on Lower Sloane Street.  I wanted to know the area better because I have taken a house on Holbein Mews nearby.  I was wandering the neighborhood making friends with the restaurants, the shop keepers, and of course the food shops.  When I walked around the corner from the Sloane Club, I found THE CHELSEA CAKE SHOP.  I could hardly believe my eyes!

I opened the door to find a world of CAKES that dazzled my eyes.  Truthfully, I couldn’t believe the creations.  Before I could get my head around the shop, I met two of the most charming ladies who greeted me and invited me to take pictures of some of their example cakes.  The two lovely ladies had smiles as big as all outdoors, and I could tell that these were real bakers who loved their trade.  They were artist bakers!

I asked the ladies if I could take their picture;  they blushed and consented.  I asked if I could do a few quick photos of their cakes.  I could see the pleasure in their faces.  I told them that I was posting these images on the Internet and writing an article about their cake shop so that my visitors to London could have an alternative to the unpleasant birthday cakes we never get used to.  I told the ladies to check out my blog.londonconnection.com  and they would see my post with their shining smiles and delicious cakes.  My visit was pure pleasure for me.

I really enjoyed these two ladies and their shop.  I can only imagine how fabulous these cakes must be at a birthday party.   If you are in London visiting with someone in your group celebrating a birthday, go to Lower Sloane Street, and order a cake.  I will post their card with contact details.

Fabulous.

BASIA ZARZYCKA – AN AMAZING “GIRLIE” SHOP AT SLOANE SQUARE

YIKES, I am out of water, but I thought my female readers would enjoy this post.  Our family used to have a flat near Sloane Square where I wandered and knew most shops.  The shops were always very interesting–with a slight “wow” edge to them.  But, they were certainly fun.  One evening, I passed in front of BASIA ZARZYCKA’s shop at 52 Sloane Square, just behind Oriel’s.  I stood in front of the shop and was really AMAZED at what was in the window.  It was like a fairy’s world of flowers, bows, corsages, jewelry, beads-beads-beads.  My wife met me for dinner and we walked back to look at the wedding dress that was in the window.  My first reaction was WHO WOULD EVER WEAR SUCH A THING.  But when I looked at the dress a second time with my wife, we decided that BASIA ZARZYCKA had created a gown–half peasant, half fairy–to be worn by a magical figure.

This evening, one of my daughters was talking about a piece of jewelry she had bought at the BZ Shop on Sloane Square.  It brought back a flood of memories, and I thought I would post some images to intrigue some of my very feminine readers who might light to visit this shop while on a visit to London.

I don’t know if I would purchase unusual items in this shop, but I know that I loved visiting with my daughters.  When young ladies are in this shop, it is as if they are transported to another sphere with all their hats, feathers, flowers, beads and glitter.  When fathers and husbands are in the shop, I am sure they are confused with the writing on the tags:  is this the shop phone number–it couldn’t possibly be the price!

But, goodness, isn’t it fun to dream a bit once in awhile?  One of the ladies that was in the shop with my daughter said she comes here to get ideas for her own embroidery and bead work.  I thought to myself:  AH THERE IS A SMART GIRL.

Please enjoy the photos.  They are amazing.  And it is even more amazing in the shop.

Enjoy, young ladies.  Run for the HILLS, Fathers and Husbands!

Yikes!

THE REFURBISHED SAVOY LUXURY HOTEL TO RE-OPEN IN OCTOBER 10-10-2010

THE SAVOY HOTEL was closed in 2007 for a complete refurbishment with a budget of 100 million pounds.  It is announced in London today that the famous hotel will re-open in October–100 million pounds over budget, but we are promised that the GRAND OL’ LADY will be spectacular. The festivities celebrating the re-opening will take place on the 10th of the 10th month of 2010.  Old time visitors to the hotel will recognize the same piano Stravinsky played, the same bar where Marilyn Monroe drank, and the same roof top where Fred Astaire danced.  But there are many improvements and additions. For me, a visit to the SAVOY is a must while in London.  You don’t have to have the Royal Suite at 24,000 pounds a night, but you can certainly enjoy the reception rooms of the hotel. What about that one special “NIGHT OUT” at the Savoy’s fabulous restaurant overlooking the Thames –perhaps DOVER SOLE?

THIS IS A LONDON LANDMARK FOR SURE.  I love to look at the FACADE and the grand entrance.  It is great to know that the refurbishment did not consider remodeling the fabulous art deco APPROACH. I have a really wonderful friend, Nell Fairbanks, who says every six months she gets all dressed up, throws her mother’s 50′s fox cape over her shoulders, and heads to the Savoy for drink and a leisurely walk to the restaurant where she orders the cheapest entree on the menu. She says IT JUST MAKES HER FEEL GOOD after a long week as a secretary in the Foreign Office.  When her husband was alive, they used to give the most amazing COSTUME PARTIES at their flat in Chelsea–you really learned what FUN was.  The wonderful thing about the Savoy is the NOSTALGIA on a grand scale that oozes from the walls! Stephanie and I used to give a party at the Savoy every two years for all our property owners who supported our company.  I will find some photos and post them so you can have a real chuckle.

When I read the ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE SAVOY’S RE-OPENING, I felt warm all over.

Wonderful.

MAGIC MARK THE CLOWN

Filed under: Give a party — tmooresr @ 7:36 am

I JUST HAD TO POST THIS BLOG FOR MY READERS.  I went back to Covent Garden this morning to pick up two puppets I had ordered from my PUPPET MAN at Jubilee Market.  He is a wonderful gentleman, and puppets are his whole life.  While I was talking to him this morning before I headed off for another busy day, a young fellow came by to speak to the PUPPET MAN.  I was introduced to this pleasant young man who turns out to be a CLOWN for private parties.  After a few minutes of really enjoyable chatter, I knew I had to let my readers know about him.

His name is MAGIC MARK THE CLOWN. (MARK BURFORD)  Mark is only 21 years old, and at a very young age went off with the CIRCUS all over Europe.  He is now back in Europe doing private parties, birthday parties, and special events.

Let me give you his details:  MAGIC MARK THE CLOWN, Telephone:  07504960397    Email:  magicmark@marvellousmayhem.co.uk   (he wrote the address so the spellling is his)  His website will be up soon:  http://www.marvellousmayhem.co.uk (again his spelling)

He showed me some of his promotional photos on his phone, and he said he would email them to me.  But until I receive them, I will put up the photo I took of Mark at the Puppel Stall in JUBILEE MARKET.

If my flat visitors are coming to London and want a birthday party or just a fun event, give Mark a call.  He is really a pleasant, talented, classy young man.  THE PUPPET MAN HIGHLY RECOMMENDS HIM.

Let’s support him.  Thanks, readers.
