THE MAY, 1937 CORONATION OF KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH: MY GRANDFATHER’S WOODSHOP CLOCK

Filed under: King George VI — tmooresr @ 10:00 am

I was amused this weekend to find a clock my grandfather had which he kept in his little woodworking shop at his home in San Marino, California.  I actually knew the clock was in one of his boxes of possessions which I still have, but I had never noticed that it was a 1937 CORONATION CLOCK.  He had bars of soap with the royal portraits and other souvenirs, but I never paid much attention to the clock.  I think these kinds of souvenirs give insight into the era where the “Unexpected King” and his consort were making every effort to fill the void of King Edward VIII’s abdication.  I have suddenly become rather fond of this little Art Deco family souvenir.  I hope you like it.

ONCE THERE WERE THREE QUEENS: THE DEATH OF KING GEORGE VI — THAT “STIFF UPPER LIP”

Filed under: King George VI — tmooresr @ 10:32 am

In February 1952, I remember my father and particularly my grandfather telling me that THE KING IS DEAD.  My father admired King George VI for his bravery, his ability to become better than he was, and for his love of his people.  He was the king who wasn’t supposed to be–except his older brother abdicated.  We all saw the movie THE KING’S SPEECH, and we know the story.  After an heroic service to his country, he died young—in his sleep at Sandringham House in Norfolk.  This amazing photograph hit the press and was instantly the picture we all knew and remember when we heard the sad news.  The Queen Mother in her grief, Queen Mary always stoic in her suffering, and the young Queen Elizabeth II looking afar in her wonderment–it all creates the essence of Britain.  It is my favorite photograph of all time.  What a story, and what a moment in history.  Such a great King.
