LET ME MAKE A SUGGESTION: LOTUS OF SIAM, THE FINEST THAI RESTAURANT

Several years ago, a friend of ours suggested we try LOTUS OF SIAM, a Thai restaurant located on a strip mall in  very unfashionable area of Las Vegas.  We made reservations and  began an evening enjoying the most amazing cuisine.  We have taken friends and family; and in every case, the meals have been fabulous.  Tonight, Mrs. Moore and I enjoyed garlic shrimp, curry fried duck, and the most amazing duck fried rice–and enjoyed every bite.  I spoke with the waiter about the restaurant and about the huge clientele who enjoy this restaurant.  I was reminded that there are two direct flights from London to Las Vegas, and they have found LOTUS OF SIAM.  If you find yourselves in Las Vegas, check out LOTUS OF SIAM on East Sahara Blvd, in a very unglamorous strip mall.  If you don’t make reservations, you will have a long wait.  It is fantastic.  We leave for Palm Springs in the morning, leaving Las Vegas bright and early, but with great memories of LOTUS OF SIAM.

WARMING UP IN LAS VEGAS ON THE WAY TO PALM SPRINGS — BUT THINKING ABOUT THE WALLACE COLLECTION!

Filed under: Las Vegas — tmooresr @ 5:09 pm

Even though Mrs. Moore and I are on our way to warmer climates for the rest of the winter, our thoughts are not far from London.  I am on the phone with our apartment team two or three times a day, so I know about London weather:  dull, wet, some sunshine, just a sweater today, drenched, soaked through and through.  London is London, and I love it with an umbrella or without.  But to charge our batteries after a great deal of traveling this year, Stephanie and I are in Las Vegas to see the TITANIC EXHIBITION at the Luxor and then on our way to Palm Springs tomorrow afternoon.  It has been so beautiful here in Las Vegas today;  we can swim in a warm pool, soak up the direct sun, and DREAM ABOUT THE WALLACE COLLECTION ON MANCHESTER SQUARE inLondon.  No one believes that, but it is true.  Goodness, don’t we all have fun in our own ways.    If you are in Palm Springs, please come visit us.

LAS VEGAS: THE VENETIAN HOTEL — AN AMAZING HOSPITALITY

Filed under: Las Vegas — tmooresr @ 11:21 am

We spent our “Rock Bank Weekend” at the Bellagio Hotel, but I wandered each morning through the gardens and lobbies of the other great hotels.  I particularly enjoyed the VENETIAN where I met numerous British travelers who told me they had taken the direct flight from London and were having the most amazing fun.  So many of them seemed to be staying at the Venetian.  I thought I would the images I took to share with my British readers who are thinking of a stay in Las Vegas in THE VENETIAN.  It is very beautiful.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB: THE DRUMMER BEN THOMPSON

OH MY GOODNESS!  There is one thing I know for sure:  there is a lot of fun “out there” to be enjoyed ;  your age doesn’t matter!  Those who have been following my blog will remember the story of Mrs. Moore and my meeting a young drummer on the EuroStar  when we were returning from Paris  to London last month.  Remember?  He sat with us, and we had a wonderful time hearing about his new life as a drummer in a rock band called TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB.   We were taken by his story and the music history of this young 21-year-old musician name BEN THOMPSON.   As the train pulled into St Pancras International Station in London, we exchanged email addresses and said our warm GOOD BYE’S –feeling like we had met someone we would like to keep in touch with.  We had taken the last train from Paris to London so it was midnight before we arrived home, but I went to my computer immediately and looked up BEN THOMPSON and the TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB.  Needless to say, I was curious.  We sent Ben an Email thanking him for sharing his story and hoped we would meet again one day whenever or wherever.  We knew we wouldn’t get an email back because he said HE WAS SO HUNGRY AND MAYBE HIS GIRLFRIEND WOULD STIR UP SOME BEANS ON TOAST.  The next morning, I noticed Ben’s return email on my computer which contained information about the TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB’s next American tour.  We noted that the group was coming to Las Vegas on 27 October, performing at THE HOUSE OF BLUES in the hotel MANDALAY BAY.  My wife said LET’S GO.  So, I emailed Ben to say Stephanie, June, and I were coming to Las Vegas to see him and hear his band.  We have exchanged emails over the past several weeks about  how his tour was progressing.  And sure enough, they were filling the house at every stop.  I emailed Ben that we would pick him up about 5:00 on 27 October and have dinner at the LOTUS OF SIAM (best Thai restaurant in the world!) and on to the HOUSE OF BLUES.  Everything worked out like magic;  we ate fabulous food and heard the TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB at a table accommodation that Ben and his friends chose for us.  THE HOUSE WAS PACKED, PACKED, PACKED with young people standing even against the walls, layers thick.  THEN LET THE SHOW BEGIN!  There we were, three vintage adults among hundreds of bouncing, waving young people having the time of their lives.  I looked over, and even June was clapping and waving her hands, smiling from ear to ear.  My feet started tapping, and I picked up my camera and off we went–just another part of a noisy, happy, wonderful bunch of human beings sharing music together.  I watched Ben Thompson play/pound his drums, and I could not imagine how one not-very-big guy could fly the sticks at such a speed that my poor camera almost said NO PHOTOS HERE BOSS!  Well, I got lots of pictures–let’s say IMPRESSONS of a night I will never forget.  After the show, Ben and his friends gave us an album called BEACON, signed by every member of the group to be given to my granddaughter Taylor who knows and enjoys the TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB music.   We were given a tour of their huge, huge travel bus/home and their enormous trailer which carries all their equipment and instruments.  It was late, and we knew it was time for us to head back to the hotel–that’s late for folks our age!  But one thing we knew for sure was we would meet up in London in January for another layer on our “friendship cake.”  I have been traveling like this all my life in all circumstances, and I have dragged my own children with me on many occasions.  But there is one thing for sure:  YOU CAN HAVE THE WHOLE APPLE, not just a bite of this wonderful world!  TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB, I am a friend and fan.  I WILL SEE YOU IN JANUARY IN LONDON.  God Bless!

LAS VEGAS BREAKFAST: HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT LAS VEGAS BREAKFASTS? WELL, IT’S TRUE. YIKES! $6.95

Under the most magnificent skies, we walked down the Strip to have breakfast–a check Mexican Ranchera Omelet.  This is where we ended up, and this is what we tried to eat.  IT WAS MAMMOTH.  My suggestion:  buy one and split it.  Goodness me!

My doctor, Dr. Seth Lewis, reads my blog.  I can assure him that I ate 1/3 of the omelet and 1/2 of one waffle!  I know when I a well off, Dr.

LAS VEGAS, WE HAVE ARRIVED ALONG WITH ABOUT 300,000 BRITS WHO TAKE THE DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM HEATHROW TO LAS VEGAS. REMEMBER THE DRUMMER FROM THE EURO STAR CROSSING?

Filed under: Las Vegas — tmooresr @ 11:07 pm

We came to LAS VEGAS to meet up with the drummer BEN THOMPSON who is in Las Vegas for a ROCK CONCERT tomorrow night.  We decided to drive to Las Vegas from our home high in the Rocky Mountains to hear the concert, have a great meal at a Thai restaurant, and renew our friendship with this young man who is going places;  he is a really shiny penny.  HE IS THE DRUMMER WE MET ON THE EUROSTAR WHEN RETURNING TO LONDON FROM PARIS LAST MONTH.  Tonight, we wandered around this crazy city.  It is a city of such contrasts:  one minute it is all about calling-a-girl-to-you- room signs, and the next minute one is enjoying the most wonderful decorative arts in the lobby of the Bellagio.  I will photograph the rock concert tomorrow evening, but until then I will share some photographs I took this evening of this CITY OF CONTRASTS.  I home you will grin, chuckle, and laugh.  Here we go!

A LONDONER IN LAS VEGAS: ALL IN ONE DAY

Filed under: Las Vegas — tmooresr @ 8:45 am
Saturday in Las Vegas is an exciting place to be.   My family enjoyed a warm, beautiful day in this amazing city.  I think February is the perfect month to be in Las Vegas because it is cool, bright, and interesting:  so many shows, exhibits, and activities.  We started out with a fabulous breakfast in the Mirage , and we ended the day attending the KEVIN JAMES AND RAY ROMANO stand-up comedy show which was really hilarious.  We went shopping at the Mall at Caeser’s Palace, and ate in excellent restaurants for lunch and dinner.  Everywhere we went, the Brits were here getting some sunshine and enjoying the casual, fun atmosphere.  Elton John performs again tonight, and there isn’t a ticket anywhere, so the big shows sell out early.  I love the fish tanks, the gardens, the “big cats” and the art galleries where people are buying even in these difficult economic times.  My grandson went into the ROLEX shop and asked the price of a really beautiful watch.  Price?  $74,000 US.  I think he got the picture really fast.  We looked at a sapphire and diamond necklace, selling for $777,000 US.  Hey, it’s fun to look, and a visitor will see items here in one place that he won’t see anywhere else in the world.  Faberge has a beautiful shop as does Valentino and all the other high-end names.  And the food!  The menus are filled with fabulous offerings:  lobster, fine wines, great salads, and steaks.  Really, for recreation, Las Vegas is a very exciting place.

Today we are having a famous Las Vegas breakfast, going to the M&M shop with the grandchildren, and then we are off to Hoover Dam which is one of the great engineering achievements of the 20th century.  I flew over the Hoover Dam during a helicopter tour a few years ago, but today we want to see the “masterpiece” inside and close up.  It is only 45 miles from LV, so we will have a fun afternoon.  Tonight, we have reservations at a very famous Thai restaurant in a very ordinary strip mall, but the food is world famous.  And tonight’s entertainment?  Who knows!  Still no plans, but lots of options.

It’s not London, but it is a great place to stretch out, enjoy the sun, food, shows, and shopping.  Really a great break in our family’s busy schedule.  I love chatting to Brits anywhere in the world.  And, they are here in abundance.  Isn’t this a great world?  Aren’t we having fun!
