THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY LONDON is one of the most interesting experiences.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are now in Hollywood in an effort to bring attention to the British film industry which is influenced by Hollywood.  This stunning collection of glamor portraits will draw great public interest.

FERGUS GREER AT THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

This is going to be a exhibition NOT TO BE MISSED.  I have followed Fergus Greer’s work for years both in the United States and in England.  The National Gallery has acquired a collection of Fergus Greer’s portraits which will celebrate the world of literature, politics, music, and film.

Fergus moved to Los Angeles in 1997, but returned to London in 2007 where he now carries on a very successful portrait studio.  Fergus’s first exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery was in 2001.  He was an officially accredited war artist and documented the war in Kosovo.  He was a society photographer for Vanity Fair and the New Yorker.

A photograph of Prince William and Harry has come to light and will be the center of the NPG Exhibition.  Obviously, the timing for the portrait is perfect and should be of great interest.

I am posting a few of Greer’s photographs.  I like the pure beauty of the photograph where the subject emerges from the image as though they were in your presence.  The lack of affectation is wonderful and laudable.

The exhibition is show 7 March  until 10 September.  All my readers who will be in London during this period will be walking past the National Portrait Gallery several times during your visit.  Pop into the Gallery where this free show will be a memorable experience.

I am anxious to see it.  It is on my MUST DO LIST, for sure!

WELCOME TO LONDON – IT IS 2011

Filed under: lphotogrdaphy — tmooresr @ 11:41 pm

I am staying in a flat on Parliament Square these two days so I am close to all the celebrations for New Years.  (Strange, my computer is set for Mountain Time, USA, so ignore the times of posting!)  I don’t know how many people gathered to see the fireworks along the Thomas, but they were absolutely amazing.  But the really beautiful photo was BIG BEN striking at midnight with the fireworks flying in the sky behind the tower.  AND THEN, the tolling of the bell came ringing over the top of the noise from the crowds.  It was such a beautiful moment which I will never forget.  Another year!  Somehow, the world must find peace.  I kept thinking of the Queen’s Christmas Message about the St. James’s Bible, the world of sports, and other means of bringing people together.  I pray the tolling of Big Ben will be the sound of prosperity, solutions, and peace.  Why can’t we achieve it!  Everyone has his own answer to that question, but I agree with the Queen that the solution is by “coming together” with purpose.  Don’t we love our neighbors?  Why can’t that feeling go beyond our neighborhoods!

HAPPY NEW YEARS to you all.  Thank you for reading my poor words!  Please come to London.  You will love it.  You can go to Borough Market and enjoy some curry, and you can go to the National Gallery to view the two great Leonardo DaVinci images which will thrill you for a lifetime.  God Bless!  Aren’t we fortunate to be alive to enjoy all this!

HRH PRINCE HARRY — THE FIELD OF REMEMBRANCE

Filed under: BRITISH HISTORY,lphotogrdaphy,The Royal Family — tmooresr @ 11:46 am

Goodness, don’t we enjoy watching young people grow up and grow into productive lives.  Prince Harry is certainly full of personality as he successfully represents the Royal Family.  Prince Harry’s close friend JONATHAN WOODGATE from the Household Cavalry was killed in the Afghanistan conflict.  Attending this dedication was a personal mission for this young prince.

Prince Harry dedicated the FIELD OF REMEMBRANCE at Wooten Bassett, Wiltshire yesterday.

I thought my gentle readers would enjoy these touching images.

Fine

QUEEN VICTORIA IN 1890 – AN AMAZING IMAGE — PHOTO SHARING

QUEEN VICTORIA did not llike to have her picture taken.  She never smiled, and she did not like to look straight into the camera.  When I found this amazing 1890 image, I had to share it with my wonderful readers.  I knew your would enjoy seeing it.  They named an AGE after this Queen, and I think you can sense why.  Wow!  What a photograph.

If any of my readers run into these kinds of wonderful photographs about English history, send them on.  I will post them.

Enjoy.

THE TUDOR CHRONICLES 1485-1603 by Susan Doran

ANOTHER SLEEPLESS NIGHT.  I keep all my notes in little leather-bound volumes which I buy at Barnes and Noble.  I keep them by my side of the bed, and when I visualize a new post for my blog–usually in the middle of the night–I make notes and then try to go back to sleep.  So, off to the bookstore I went to collect my notebooks.  When I walked into the shop, right in front of me, was THE TUTOR CHRONICLES by Susan Doran with one of those SPECIAL PRICE TAGS on the front of it–$19.00.  I sat down in one of the chairs in the coffee shop in the bookstore and started to read this large, large tome.  The text was an “easy read,” and I was off into my own world.  The images, pages after pages of them, fascinated me.  There were pictures there which I had never seen, and I have been looking through books about the Tudors for 40 years.

The reign of Elizabeth I has been my favorite period in English history–well, next to the Prince Albert Period of Queen Victoria’s reign.  As I went through the book JUST LOOKING page by page, the thought came to me that this would be a great book for my readers to have on their coffee tables.  $19.00–hey, come on–that’s lunch at the Chinese take-away these days.  Really, I have never seen such a collection of fabulous photographs from the Tudor Period in my life–all in one book!

After our usual evening rituals in this house–garden, dinner, dog, and Sweetie–I lay down to start reading.  It is now early the next morning, and I have been reading all night.  I have really enjoyed it.  The author is SUSAN DORAN who is currently Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford.  Her primary interests relate to the reign of Elizabeth I, in particular the theme of marriage and succession.  She has published and edited sixteen books, most notably MONARCHY AND MATRIMONY:  THE COURTSHIPS OF ELIZABETH I;  QUEEN ELIZABETH I;  MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS: AN ILLUSTRATED LIFE.

I am not selling books on my blog, but I don’t hesitate to recommend one from time to time.  I have had huge pleasure between the covers of this book during the night–yikes, that sounds awful!–and I know that my readers will enjoy it.  Most Barnes and Noble bookstores have the same inventory, so I think you will find this publication on their discount table just as you enter the front door.  IF NOT, ASK THE CLERK.  There won’t be too many people in our communities who will be looking for THE TUDOR CHRONICLES except a few goofy Anglophiles like you and me.

THE BOOKS ARE NOW HIGHER THAN THE LAMPSHADE BY THE BED.   My son Thomas says I live in a cocoon of books, paintings, and journals.  Oh well, I can’t help myself.  I am going to post a few of the images from the book just to whet your appetite;  remember these images are just snapshots to give you an idea–they are not intended to be professionally presented.  THE COLLECTION OF PICTURES is fabulous;  I hope this gives you a good idea of the content.

Now tell me this isn’t FUN.  Yikes!

CECIL BEATON – ALWAYS AMUSING – ALWAYS A SNOB!

Filed under: lphotogrdaphy — tmooresr @ 10:56 pm

5108r4IJf8L._SS500_Cecil Beaton was certainly one of the great wits of the Twentieth Century.  I have been working on an up-coming blog about the PHOTOGRAPHER CECIL BEATON and ran into a series of quotes.  I thought you would enjoy them.

–All I want is the best of everything and there’s very little of that left.

–Americans have an abiding belief in their ability to control reality by purely material means…airline insurance replaces the fear of death with the comforting prospect of cash.

–Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.

–I can’t afford a whole new set of enemies.

–I have the worst ear for criticism;  even when I have created a stage set I like, I always hear the woman in the back of the dress circle who says she doesn’t like blue.

–More varied than any landscape was the landscape in the sky, with islands of gold and silver, peninsulas of apricot and rose against a background of many shades of turquoise and azure.

–Mrs. Woolf’s complaint should be addressed to her creator, who made her, not me!

–Never in the history of fashion has so little material been raised so high to reveal so much that needs to be covered so badly.

–Perhaps the world’s second-worst crime is boredom;  the first is being a bore.

–San Francisco is perhaps the most European of all American cities.

–What is elegance?  Soap and water!

Goodness, what a talented character–I am sure he loved to “cut one dead, right on the spot” with humor.  I will have the CECIL BEATON PHOTOGRAPHS up soon.  Many of them are on display at the NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY.  Fantastic.
