THE NATIONAL GALLERY ON TRAFALGAR SQUARE

Filed under: National Gallery London — tmooresr @ 1:01 pm

Everyone who comes to London spends time in the National Gallery.  The museum is one of the most famous art museums in the world.  This national collection is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings in London.  For me, the building itself is the greatest  masterpiece of all.  Let me tell you about the facade.  At the time the National Gallery was being built during the first quarter of the 19th century, King George IV (one the Prince Regent) was building his new Buckingham Palace where he was creating the most magnificent setting for his splendid Royal Collection.  He decided to pull down his historic home CARLTON HOUSE up the Mall which he had inherited from his grandmother the mother of King George III.   Perfect!  Much of the facade of Carlton House including the many columns were transferred to Trafalgar Square for the new facade of new National Gallery.  These columns and pilasters are absolutely exquisite.  What a wonderful bit of luck that the great Carlton House facade was not lost to posterity.

These are images of the Prince Regent/King George IV’s Carlton House, the Mall, London which was torn down and the facade was used in the facade of the National Gallery:

And of course the collection at the National Gallery is supreme:

TODAY IS A VISIT TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY TO SEE THE MAGNIFICENT VERMEERS

Filed under: National Gallery London — tmooresr @ 10:12 pm

THE NATIONAL GALLERY is an immense national collection of paintings so I usually organize my visit either by gallery or by artist.  I see visitors to the gallery dragging themselves as they try to view every room, remembering nothing, and determined to collapse before concluding their visit.  I suggest a very different style for your visit.  I am off to the National Gallery this morning to see only the Vermeers.  Believe me, that is about as much as I can get my head around in one visit.
