We were with friends in the VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM in South Kensington with a group of friends a couple weeks ago. In a glass case, we spotted a most beautiful fan which had belonged to Queen Victoria.
After we had all admired the fan, the question arose about the words we saw on the fan: HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The comment was made that they saw these words all over London, particularly on the Queen’s coat of arms. I explained that this motto belongs to the ORDER OF THE GARTER, the highest order of chivalry in England and Wales. Of course that led to a discussion about the origins of this motto. Today, I posted a review of our property on Maddox Street; and soon after posting, I found myself in a wonderful conversation with a lady who was well versed in British history and who was going to stay in our Mayfair flat. During the conversation, the client stated that she had bought at Portobello Road a wonderful engraving of King George V in his Garter robes with the Garter Motto clearly visible. It was a wonderful conversation and delightful to run into someone who was so well informed. I thought that I should post a few images and tell the story about the Order of the Garter for those visitors who are soon going to London and who will see these historical words almost everywhere one looks.

The Ancient Order of the Garter – Ceremonies at St. George’s Chapel and banquet in the Waterloo Chamber! I am so excited about all the events in London during the recentweeks. So much history and so much pageantry. And so much yet to come. It is like a new shot of excitement in the Royal Family. Wonderful for the Queen in her coming Diamond Jubilee year. Wonderful!
