PUBLIC MUSEUMS AND PUBLIC ART: THEIR COST AND EFFECTIVENESS ~~~THE BATTLE ROYAL CONTINUES~~

Filed under: Politics — tmooresr @ 8:32 am

I have been following the debate in Britain and in the United States about the cost of public museums and the public’s collections of art.  The relationship between public art museums and the public treasury has been a continuing debate for decades.  A well known art dealer in London wrote an article on his blog encouraging his American readership to take a certain political stand and vote for a particular presidential candidate whom he felt would protect public art programs (PBS).  I sent this art dealer an email cautioning him about various aspects of his article, especially since he is an art dealer and these are very sensitive matters.  His answer to me was BOLLOCKS.   I have been enjoying my correspondence with another art dealer in London who has  been keeping me aware of what is happening in this debate about the costs of maintaining British art museums.  He forwarded me the following article which I think reveals the level to which this debate has sunk.  I think it is worth reading.

I will keep you updated on this very important debate.  But I am aware that directing voters to particular political candidates and other such extremes will only inflame the serious matter at hand.  We all know that when it comes to the bottom line, it is the conciliatory voice that wins the day.  I find pedantic debate senseless if it does not consider the public’s voice in this matter.  At the end of the day, that’s where the decision will be made.  My view is great museums and galleries must be saved at all cost, but first let’s try using “honey.”  WARNING VOTERS?  Not such a good idea.

Filed under: Politics — tmooresr @ 7:00 am

I express no political views on my blog.  I do forward news from London from THE TELEGRAPH which I read almost daily.  Here is Alex Spillius’s article RUN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE  – take it for what it is worth.
