BILL’S PIZZA IN PALM SPRINGS

Since we have been in Palm Springs, we have heard that BILL’S PIZZA is the best pizza in the world.  I have traveled a great deal all over the world, and I know where there are several PIZZA parlors –so the Palm Springs enthusiasm was not taken seriously in this household. Last evening, we didn’t want to dress for dinner, and we didn’t want to prepare dinner SO we decided to see what the BILL’S PIZZA is all about.  We found a very simple, basic restaurant with lots of families chatting and laughing.  We ordered a cheese and meats pizza.  When it arrived, I could hardly believe the size.  We knew we would never eat all this!  BUT FROM THE FIST BITE, IT WAS THE BEST PIZZA I HAD EVER EATEN.  I have eaten pizza in New York, Rome, Florence, and Miami.  This pizza at BILL’S PIZZA  takes the prize.  They advertise that their pizza is the best in the country, and I agree.  I have never written a post about a common pizza, but COMMON PIZZA THIS PIZZA IS NOT.  And where?  Right, in Palm Springs!

LET ME MAKE A SUGGESTION: LOTUS OF SIAM, THE FINEST THAI RESTAURANT

Several years ago, a friend of ours suggested we try LOTUS OF SIAM, a Thai restaurant located on a strip mall in  very unfashionable area of Las Vegas.  We made reservations and  began an evening enjoying the most amazing cuisine.  We have taken friends and family; and in every case, the meals have been fabulous.  Tonight, Mrs. Moore and I enjoyed garlic shrimp, curry fried duck, and the most amazing duck fried rice–and enjoyed every bite.  I spoke with the waiter about the restaurant and about the huge clientele who enjoy this restaurant.  I was reminded that there are two direct flights from London to Las Vegas, and they have found LOTUS OF SIAM.  If you find yourselves in Las Vegas, check out LOTUS OF SIAM on East Sahara Blvd, in a very unglamorous strip mall.  If you don’t make reservations, you will have a long wait.  It is fantastic.  We leave for Palm Springs in the morning, leaving Las Vegas bright and early, but with great memories of LOTUS OF SIAM.

WINDSOR: DRURY HOUSE RESTAURANT — NELL GWYN’S HOUSE, 1645

After our visit to Windsor Castle, we decided that we would do a bit of shopping in the Edinburgh Woolen Mills Shop and have dinner down one of the little Windsor Lanes.  I have eaten in several of the little restaurants in Windsor over the years, and I have sat in this particular restaurant when owned by various owners.  But this visit was vastly different.  It is now owned by a new chef by the name of Steven who is passionate about his new enterprise. We ordered two roast-beef-and- yorkshire-pudding dinners, one roast lamb dinner, and one roast-beef-and-yorkshire-with pheasant breasts /yorkshire pudding dinner–they were all extremely tasty and piping hot!  The chef/owner Steve came to welcome us, and I asked him about the big question:  are there really tunnels which connected Nell Gwyn’s house where we were eating to King Charles II’s rooms in Windsor Castle.  He smiled and SAID THAT THE LEGEND IS TRUE.  Well, I enjoyed my meal very much, felt like I was eating in a 17th century pub, but the fact that this owner was going to open up about the legend of the tunnels stirred my blood and twinkled my eyes.  I put down my fork as he told us that he had been down the tunnels which were under Nell Gwn’s House where we were eating, and he would be happy to email photos to me.  I WAS JUBILANT.  I certainly did enjoy my meal, but the enthusiastic owner had me on the tip of my toes.  I am home in the States today and found Steve’s promised tunnel emails just pop onto my email screen.  That’s the proof I needed to convince me that lusty Charles II went to no end to enjoy his lively Nell.  Enjoy the photos.  The meal photo is not clear because my camera fogged up, and I was not about to wait until the environment changed.  I was starving.  What a fantastic way to end a trip.  I was wondering if images of Charles II/ Nell Gwyn’s tunnel have ever been shown to the public before.  Well, they are out there now.  The Castle, years ago, sealed off the passage–can you image Queen Mary having tunnels into the private apartments of Windsor Castle?  Ah, goodness, aren’t we having fun?

FOR AN ENGLISH BREAKFAST AND THE BEST LUNCH SANDWICHES: IT’S SCOTT’S ON NEW ROW IN COVENT GARDEN

Filed under: restaurants — tmooresr @ 10:39 pm

When I am in London for long periods of time, I depend on my favorite restaurants to keep me going.  This early morning, I want to pay tribute to SCOTT’S on New Row off St. Martin’s Lane in Covent Garden.  I will have breakfast here almost every morning because the food is excellent, varied, and right from the oven.  Tony, the chef and owner of Scott’s, has been on the street with his breakfast, lunch shop for 31 years.  This is one fine man, an excellent cook, a real professional, and a friend.  Over the years, I have tried an English breakfast in numerous restaurants and sandwich shops all over London;  I assure you that SCOTT’S is the very best.  I always sit at the little table just inside the door because I really enjoy listening to all the hungry clients who pop into the shop to get a sandwich on the way to work or the regulars who sit at a table, having a warm breakfast, doing the cross word puzzles in the daily papers.  I love the bantering and the dialects just like in the movies.  I like to highlight shops which really provide a unique service, and SCOTT’S is outstanding.  When you have a salt beef sandwich and a pickle, you will agree that there is absolutely no place better.  Let me post a few photographs to help you see what I am talking about.  Goodness, it is very early morning here in London, and I am already starving.  Off to Scott’s I will go.

Yesterday, I told my friend Tony, the chef, that I didn’t trust skinny chefs.  I don’t think he liked my comment, but he was quick with a response:  ”A skinny client is my failure.”  Touche, Tony.   He, his wife, and their two daughters are my friends!  I like them a lot, and the food is spectacular!
