I always say that I travel “poor.” As I have written several times: my father used to say: ”Put it in your front pocket, and if they get it, they deserve it.” Why would you carry expensive items or even your passport around London when your mind is on touring? Certainly, if you have credit cards and money on you, you have packed them away in a money belt or in a safe place. A tourist walking around any large city with an open purse or a wallet in his back pocket is asking for trouble. It is the same in any large city. Certainly be careful of anyone who approaches you in the street. Just smile and walk on! When I have had friends who have had been subjected to a scam or pick-pocket, they always say I DON’T KNOW HOW IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. The answer is YOU WERE NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND YOU HAD NOT TAKEN NORMAL PRECAUTIONS. You want to be looking and taking pictures, not worrying about your passport! LEAVE IT HOME. SPECIAL ATTENTION WHEN IN CROWDS! Interesting article, Rick Steves.
