This rips me apart. England and Scotland and no Britain? IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE in my BRITISH MIND. I can just imagine the sadness in the Queen’s heart!

When King George VI died in 1952, leaving Elizabeth the Queen Mother a widow, the old castle of Barrogill on the cold and windy north coast of Caithness drew the grieving Queen to Scotland. The Queen Mother decided that she would bury herself in the restoration of an ancient castle which would be given its ancient name: THE CASTLE OF MEY. Several years ago, a friend of mine named Bob DeMartin and I decided we would organize biking tours through Scotland to John O”Groats and back to Edinburgh. We studied the maps, researched other biking tours, and went to Scotland to do our trail run. We forgot one thing: THE WEATHER. The first night, we spent under a railroad bridge in our little camper; the second night we spent in a tent in pouring rain, the third night we packed up our bikes and said THIS ISN’T GOING TO WORK. So, we went touring ourselves. We went all over the Highlands and had a fantastic trip including views of THE CASTLE OF MEY on the north coast; I was determined that one day I would return to this very interesting place when I was not on a bike and when I was not freezing cold. We ended up in Lairg in a salmon fishing lodge, sat by the roaring fire, and listened to fishing stories in a fabulous hall lined with antlers, fishing poles, wellies, oiled jackets, and fishing baskets. I had the time of my life, loved every minute of it, and knew I had found the Scotland I had heard so much about. Well, I have been back to Scotland many times, but I have never been back to the Castle of Mey. While I was in London a couple of weeks ago, I watched a television program about visiting Scotland. There was a lengthy discussion about the Castle of Mey. I said to myself: AH, NOW IS THE TIME FOR ME TO GO TO SCOTLAND, TO THE NORTH COAST OF CAITHNESS . Let’s check it out.

I think the Queen will last forever. Yesterday, I was talking to one of the police guards at the Palace. He said THE WORLD WILL CHANGE WHEN THIS FINE LADY PASSES. His comment was full of affection. These recent photographs of the Queen, Prince Philip, and Prince Charles are wonderful:
