LONDON SOUVENIRS: THE PAPERWEIGHT

Next week, my son Thomas is taking his wife, son, sister, and nephew to London for a spring holiday.  One of my grandsons is eleven, and the other grandson is 12.  They are young, but we are trying to start their “London” experience and  hopefully affect their international travel attitudes.  A young child likes to come home with something to remind him of his trip and to share with his friends at home.  I think the football “soccer” banners for the bedroom and a collection of paper weights for their desks and dressers. These items are not expensive, but are “fun” for young people.  I am trying to make suggestions for adults who are eager to make their children’s first visit to London a great success.  I still have one paperweight which I bought one of my sons 25/30 years ago.  They still keep them fondly.

SELF-CATERING: Grocery shopping is one of the most exciting part of a trip to London.

Filed under: shopping — tmooresr @ 11:14 am

Visitors to London anticipate their first shopping spree in a London grocery store–Sainsbury, Tesco, or whatever.  We in the LONDON CONNECTION office are asked often by first-time visitors to London about what they will find in a London grocery store.  Some are curious, and others are looking for items which are uniquely English:  hot cross buns, lemon curd, soups, candies, sausages, breads, and of course British organic soups.  What about jam donuts?  Let’s go shopping at Tesco’s near Picadilly Circus;  I think you will enjoy it.

FORTNUM AND MASON: YUMMY AND SPLENDID FOR 300 YEARS OF SERVICE

Filed under: shopping — tmooresr @ 9:40 am

FORTNUM AND MASON on Piccadilly has a 300 year history of supplying fine foods and sweets.  FORTNUM AND MASON hampers are famous all over the world.  While you are walking down Piccadilly, you will be thrilled when you stand in front of the most beautiful windows highlighting fine wines, candies, chocolates, and gourmet foods.  FORTUM AND MASON tea and honey are world famous.  The honey is gathered from the hives on the roof!  I have to say, it is fabulous, but not as good as the honey which comes from my own hives here in the Rocky Mountains.  I love to shop in Fortnum and Mason because the store is visually exquisite.  HIGH TEA is very popular, and there is a wine bar which is very popular with Londoners.  Hampers at Ascot and other social events are evidence of quality of F/M special treats.  This is a store with a great history and should be a part of your London stay.  Enjoy the photos.

LOST BRITISH DEPARTMENT STORES: MY WORLD HAS CHANGED ABSOLUTELY

Filed under: shopping — tmooresr @ 7:20 am

When I am in London, I look for shops and stores that are gone.  When I go home to California where I spent much of my youth, I look for Toytown and other stores which were once the center of my life.  When El Poche Mexican Restaurant in San Gabriel burned down, I felt like my world had completely collapsed.  I walk through Knightsbridge, and the shops seem to change yearly–sometimes for the better, and certainly sometimes for the worst.  When the Royal Warrants came down off Harrods outer walls, I knew we were in a different era.  Sometimes I feel lost without my favorite book shop in Covent Garden which closed only two years.  Sometimes I wonder if only chain stores can afford  to survive until I realize that London has lost some of its old department stores.  I am not at war with the twenty-first century, but at times I am nostalgic.  Walk down Regent Street, and you wonder if you are not at a carnival where shoes are pink plastic with studs pounded all over them.  Try to find a bolt of fine Scottish wool fabric from Aberdeen–really difficult now!   Check this out!

SHOPPING ON THE QUEEN MARY2

Shopping is one of my hobbies, and my son says it is my “bad habit.”   My wife looks the other way because she knows I love to buy her fine jewelry–especially exquisite pearls which I like most of all.  Well, I am not the only one on board who loves to buy fine pearls;  yesterday, Chopard’s shop was filled with happy customers.  I felt I had found some compatible travelers.  I do buy the “T” shirts and the ball caps–even a felt coat for our King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who is happily being cared for by his sitter at home.  Look at a few of the bits that drew my attention!  Remember, window shopping can be a lot of fun.  I suppose the salespeople call us TIRE KICKERS.
