When Stephanie and I were invited to attend the opening “FOOTBALL” game ENGLAND vs BELGIUM, we both wondered if we could manage early morning events and then evening events as well–all on the same day. Well, we are thrilled we went to Wembley to see the game! We sat on Row 6, right in the middle–THANK YOU MARIA TEIXEIRA. When I realized where we were sitting, I could hardly believe my eyes. I brought my “BIG BABY LENSE” that I thought I would need in such a huge stadium, but I used it only for stadium panorama shots. Since we were almost “on the field,” my smaller lenses were quite sufficient. I loved the game; that’s for sure. But the ATMOSPHERE and excitement were really quite something else. The Belgium supporters about tore the place apart with all kinds of spirited cheers, and the England supporters responded with their tricks. I have been to English football games before at Wembley, but it was wonderful for England to win its opening game, right in the middle of the DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. When 89,000 fans stood to sing GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, I had a lump in my throat. THE ROYAL FAMILY look-alikes brought the house down when the stadium cameras spotted them in the public seats. Such a roar! David Beckham was at the game to receive an award, and the stadium welcomed him with great cheering. The entire evening was a fabulous success for us. We hurried home to bed because we had to get up at midnight to take off for the Thames embankment to sleep rough for the night. We were determined to have the best views for the Queen’s River Pageant. Here are a few of my football photographs. I hope you feel our excitement.

Mrs. Moore and I were told that there were not tickets left for the 2 June Football match ENGLAND vs BELGIUM. We knew we were late trying to get tickets, so we decided that we would watch the game on television at home in London. Well, great jubilation here this morning as we prepare to leave for London on Monday. OUR FRIEND MARIA TEIXEIRA OBTAINED FABULOUS SEATS FOR US! And Mrs. Moore and I will join the DIAMOND JUBILEE CROWDS at Wembley for this holiday game. We are really excited. My cameras are ready to go!

My son THOMAS MOORE JR. buys IBIS BIKES like there is no tomorrow. When there is a new technology, he has to have another bike. When I open his garage door, I see an entire wall lined with a parade of IBIS BIKES. He justifies this splurging with comments like: THEY ARE HOT, IT IS TOP OF THE LINE, THEY ARE ART AS MUCH AS SPORT, on and on….. When I read this article from London this morning, I got a better idea of what goes through my son’s head. I think it is a very interesting article. The focus is on London this year with the summer Olympics, and sports technology is on everyone’s mind. I suppose the emphasis is on the finest performances using the finest equipment. My oh my–Modern times are amazing!

London is popping with activity. First the London Marathon on 17 April, then the Queen’s 85th birthday on 21 April, and then the Royal Wedding of William and Catherine on 29 April. And I will be arriving in London on 26 April, right in the middle of all the fun! Goodness. But for now, we have the London Marathon to write about. This race is one of the top five races as far as size is concerned, and the entire city is turned upside down in preparation. I will post an article, some images, and a history of the famous race. This is big stuff. I am particularly excited because four of my friends are in the race: Vanessa Scales, Gisela Oswald, Cristina Teixeira, and Alice Oliveira–the fastest runners in London! Believe me, they are quick.

As you come into central London from Heathrow Airport, some drivers will bring you along the north side of Buckingham Palace and the south side of Hyde Park. From time to time you will encounter the Household Cavalry exercising the horses or private people riding horses which have been rented from the Hyde Park Stables. If you ask the driver what this place is called, you will hear him say–perhaps with a bit of a blush– ROTTEN ROW. That will stop you for a few moments, and you will probably have the same thoughts the rest of us have had when we first heard that name: horse ordure, dung, or poop! Well, not quite so easy.
Rotten Row is a wide path of dirt/sand which was originally built at the time of William III in the 1600′s to connect Kensington Palace to his official residence at St.James’s Palace. The Row was called ROUTE DE ROI which has come to us as ROTTEN ROW–no doubt with a bit of fun and more than a few grins. But that is the source of the name–so there you have it! In Victorian and Edwardian times, fashionable people rode out in carriages and on horseback wearing their finest clothes designed to look beautiful all dressed up in the height of fashion. Beau Brummell and the other dandies of the Regency Period and Victorian times all paraded about with the sole purpose of being seen on a lovely, soft, warm day. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert rode out in fashion to greet and smile as did Queen Alexandra and her sister the Czarina of Russia–dressed in their “sweet” colors and dripping with their amazing jewels. The admiring crowds thought that the Czarina’s jewels were more fabulous, but Queen Alexandra was certainly the more beautiful.
Postcards exist showing how busy Rotten Row really was. In our era, the Row is mostly empty except for the occasional private rider or for the Queen’s Horse Guards. It is a beautiful place for a quiet or solitary walk just trying to imagine how it must have been when it was the setting for the great fashion shows of another era. Really beautiful memories. But still, it is lovely now and especially fine for photographers and squirrels. Let me post a few pictures taken on ROUTE DE ROI so you can see how beautiful it really is.
