Mrs. Moore and I spend a great deal of time around the area of Trafalgar Square and St. Martin-in-the-fields. We attend concerts at least every other week in the Church where we have spent some of our most enjoyable evenings. I have sat on the main floor and in the balconies with my camera (no flash) listening chamber music, serious Christmas music–all kinds of concerts. I love to early to enjoy this amazing masterpiece created by James Gibbs in 1726. The church is on the north-east side of Trafalgar Square, was the inspiration for the style of church often found in the States with its rectangular design, portico, and high steeple. As a result of the FIFTY NEW CHURCHES ACT of 1771, St. Martin’s was rebuilt on the site of an 11th-century church. Charles II was christened in the previous St. Martin’s in 1630, as were Francis Bacon, John Hampden and General Oglethorpe, founder of the state of Georgia. Nell Gwynn is buried there, along with George Farquhar the dramatist, Robert Boyle who discovered Boyle’s Law for gases, artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, and the cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale who lived just the street on St. Martin’s Lane where THE LONDON CONNECTION offers a flat today. In 1924, the first religious service ever to be broadcast came from St. Martin’s. St. Martin-in-the-fields is the parish church of Buckingham Palace and any baby born at the Palace is entered into the church register here. For me, the Church lives in my heart because of the architecture and the many good times I have had in this marvelous work by the genius James Gibbs.

I have written numerous articles about the concerts at St. Martin-in-the fields. Last evening, we attended a Baroque Concert which was absolutely fabulous. I encourage all our visitors to attend one of the concerts in this magnificent setting–usually candlelighted. Stephanie, June, and I were thrilled to have front row seats. I felt like I was playing the cello. The oboe stole the show! Fabulous.

When I am in London, I attend a concert at St. Martin’s at least twice a week. I enjoy these concerts, and I cherish the time I spend looking and enjoying this beautiful building which has been restored and refurbished in the past few years. It is a wonderful place for me.

I heard Mozart’s THE CORONATION MASS in Rome many years ago. I can still hear it in my mind. Mrs. Moore and I are not going to the concert at the Palace on the evening of 4 June, but we have front row seats at St. Martin in-the-Fields which will be one of the highlights of our London stay, celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. I think this great CORONATION MASS will be a fabulous contribution to the great celebrations of this fabulous Diamond Jubilee week. I think there are a few balcony seats still available. If you do come, please come visit us. We are on the front row on the main floor, and I would love to meet readers of my travel blog.
