When I first went away to university as a very young man, my mother gave me four MARK RATHKO framed prints and one CHAGAL framed print for my dull apartment walls. I hauled those prints with me all the way through layers of education; I grew to love their colors, their moods, and their beauty which had gotten deep inside me. When I bought my first London flat on my own, I put a MARK RATHKO “Blue and Black” print on my kitchen wall; can you believe, someone stole it! At some period, my grandmother gave me the biography of MARK RATHKO which fascinated me: his early life in Czarist Latvia, his emigration to New York, his struggle to be recognized outside the “established” art world of New York, and finally the paintings of his mature years. Having had a great deal of contact with my parent’s Jewish friends helped me understand the moods and sensitivities of the Jewish culture. I seemed to find a natural affinity for MARK RATHKO. When I read this article asking where a visitor to London could see MARK RATHKO, my ears perked up. My mind took a long journey back to my younger years when I first experienced a Mark Rathko painting in the home of family friends in Southern California; I will never forget the impact it had. For those other MARTH RATHKO addicts, this article will interest you.
