I AM GRATEFUL TO YOU ALL! Xmission reports 6,050,804 visits to THE ANGLOPHILE 1st and 2nd Quarters of 2011 — Daunting!

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 7:52 pm

I have spent weeks walking the streets of London, sitting on my pitch for the Royal Wedding reports, crossing the North Atlantic on a luxury liner, eating in every restaurant I could schedule, trying tons of pastries, attending plays and concerts;  I have ridden trains and planes and ships, and posted hundreds of articles and images for THE ANGLOPHILE.  It has been a real pleasure.  When XMission confirmed that for the first and  second quarters of 2011, just ending, I have had 6,050,804 visits to this effort.  I had to look at the numbers several times because I never really understand numbers above 100 very well–all those groups of three with comas and dots.  You all have been wonderful sending me photos, articles, hints, suggestions, thank-you’s, and sometimes corrections.  I have loved every minute of it.  And now the office handles FACEBOOK.  Thank you so much.  I keep thinking someone is going to get very sick of me one of these days!  I started all this because my wife suggested that there might be others who might like to listen to me talk about Britain– and to share other people’s discoveries– to give her a moment of peace.  She has been a real help.  I wish I knew each and every one of you.  Wow!

I do love to keep my ear to the rails and to listen to the word on the street.  I talk to everyone I meet who enjoy traveling as much as I do!  By the way, Mrs. Moore and I have booked passage on the Queen Mary2 for August 2012 for a second passage–we don’t want to miss out on all the conversations with all the most amazing passengers who love to talk about Britain.  Why don’t you come along.

THANK YOU.  Tear!

FATHER’S DAY WITH AN ENGLISH TWIST

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 9:39 pm

In the part of the world where I live, it is Father’s Day.  Stephanie and I have five children and thirteen grandchildren, so I do get a bit of attention on this special day for fathers.  My wife decided that I deserved a token gift from her to show her appreciation for my efforts on her behalf this year.  She is always telling me I need a new eye examination because I don’t see things around the house that need to be done leaving her to ask me to check out a problem.  She complains that I can’t hear her or don’t listen, so she offers to pay for a hearing test–she simply doesn’t understand that I have selective hearing.  The third concern that troubles her is I can’t remember to follow through with important tasks she asks me to do.  I always say that I FORGOT.  So, for Father’s Day, I received a very nice box with ribbon.  I opened it up and found a tiny note pad to write down my errands so I can’t use the I FORGOT excuse.  But what amused me was that even this small aspect of my daily life has a London theme:  The Houses of Parliament and the  red Double decker London bus.  I was so pleased with the image on the little package of note pads that I forgot to complain about the subtle jab on my Father’s Day.  Aren’t thoughtful and subtle wives clever on this special holiday?  Yikes.  No more I FORGOT’s for me!

DUKE OF CLARENCE? DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE?

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST,The Royal Family — tmooresr @ 10:54 pm

RUMORS ARE FLYING!  First, everyone heard that William and his Catherine are to become Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  Today, we hear that they might be Duke and Duchess of Clarence.  And of course, the spins are flying all over the Internet about the history of the title Duke of Clarence.  We all know about the unsuitability of the son of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, who “might” have been Jack the Ripper and who certainly visited unsuitable houses of the night (in reverse), but Prince Albert Victor died and the title died with him.  Earlier, the title of Duke of Clarence was given to one of King George III’s sons who eventually became King William IV, and the title again died out.  There are three or four earlier periods in English history when the title Duke of Clarence appeared and then died out.  But the Duke of Cambridge was also a royal title given by George III to one of his sons.  Queen Mary descended through that line. She called her Cambridge ancestors and the family of George III the OLD ROYAL FAMILY.   It is my suggestion that we leave the choosing of the title to the Queen who certainly knows all the details and will have her reasons for the selection.  Whatever title is chosen, let’s let William and Catherine create their own image and define the title to suit their own qualities.  For those who love to “spin,” please go away!  You are drizzling on our party!

From London today, more gossip:

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY TO MY VERY SPECIAL VALENTINE

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 7:08 am

Forty-five years ago, Stephanie and I began a voyage together, and she has been my Very Special Valentine ever since.  We have had a large family together; and now there are 24 individuals when we have a family dinner.  I am not sure we were aware of what we were starting, but it has been a wonderful ride with a few bumps and a lot of happiness and pleasure.  She assists me with my work writing articles for this blog.  She is never short of suggestions, and it is helpful to have a lady’s view on most matters.  I wanted to say HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to Stephanie who is my silent partner on the ANGLOPHILE project.

THE LONDON CONNECTION wishes Mrs. Stephanie Moore a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 6:21 am

For 30 years, Mrs. Stephanie Moore has been The London Connection’s greatest supporter.  When the idea of a London property rental company was formulating, Stephanie was the person whose enthusiasm encouraged me to invest in property in London and to develop this company.  I was already overly-committed in so many projects like the building of Symphony Hall in Salt Lake City, the preservation of Union Station in Ogden, Utah to house the Browning guns and cars, and the battle to preserve the Eccles Historic District–one of the first National Historic Districts in the West.   So, London had to be a hobby at the time but quickly grew because we immediately understood that people who were traveling preferred to be in flats and apartments rather than in a hotel–just as we did.  For many years, before the Internet was really an option, Mrs. Moore obtained theater tickets for our visitors;  it was a wonderful way to support our developing company.  Now, years and years later, Stephanie is celebrating her 66th birthday and continues to “caution and advise.”  She is in London at least twice a year and keeps an eye on how new flats are presented and cared for.  Believe me, she is never short of a few recommendations, and we give her our full attention!  This is Stephanie’s 66th birthday photograph, wearing Mary Pickford’s 1928 broach, a gift to Mary Pickford from Lillian Gish.  Stephanie is a lovely, gentle lady with a steel rod up her back — actually, a no-nonsense, highly-refined, cultured, and educated individual who has been my happy partner for 45 years!  Imagine that!  The happiest part of her day is having breakfast with her youngest of 13 grandchildren, Kale.  He is 3, and grandmother and grandson share great wisdom almost before the sun comes up before they both go off on their busy days.  Nice.

Happy Birthday, Stephanie.  66 and going strong!

LONDON RENTALS – SCAMS KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 4:29 pm

This email from the New York Times came to me from one of my readers and regular to our flats in London.  The post is long, but I think there is excellent information to be found here.  For me, the essential two securities are (1) pay by credit card always–never bank transfers or checks  (2) follow up a booking with a live person who knows the flat and has been in the property before.  Check with the Better Business Bureau.  Be sure you have that RING TRUE FEELING when you are doing a booking.

I hope this email will be helpful.  Sorry it is so long, but it is good information.

THE ANGLOPHILE HOST RECEIVES AN AWARD FOR “ART ADVOCACY”

Filed under: THE ANGLOPHILE HOST — tmooresr @ 4:05 am

Mrs. Moore and I spend our time between THE WILD WEST and the WILD STREETS OF LONDON.  I have been involved in the ARTS in many of its forms in both cities for a very long time.  Last night, I was given the award for ART ADVOCACY by Ogden, Utah Mayor Matthew Godfrey,  in a western American City where there is amazing history:  dams, railroads. Golden Spike, famous ski resorts, wonderful art centers, famous world-class artists, the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, several universities, film festivals, rodeo and 24th of July celebrations, biking and hiking trails, first chairman of the Federal Reserve Board – Marriner S. Eccles, builders of the Hoover Dam and almost all the railroads of the West – E.O. and W.H. Wattis, Special Collection libraries, The Union Station – The Driving of the Golden Spike, two Historic Districts:  The Eccles Historic District and the Jefferson Historic District, islands for wildlife preservation, great emphasis on historic preservation, drama and literary societies, The Egyptian Theater and the Sundance Film Festival, on and on.  This community of Ogden, Utah, is one of the most unique cities in the country.  We have made our principal home here as well as our mountain ski home because  it has been perfect for raising our children and a growing number of grandchildren.  I have spent my life enjoying the rich cultural life which we never expected to find here–it was a serendipity.  Last evening, at the Union Station Grand Lobby, I was given this award, and I am humble and daunted by such a recognition.  Funny, I am like a split personality:  HALF LONDON and HALF A WESTERN BOY. It is an amazing experience to spend your life doing what you love to do and then to be recognized by your peers.  I am very humble and grateful for all this.  Thank you so much – THANK YOU to so many friends on both side of the Pond.  Goodness me!
