MY PATERNAL GRANDFATHERS AND GREAT GRANDPARENTS PUFFED AND PUFFED, BUT WITH ROYAL STRIKERS

Filed under: THE MOORE FAMILY,tobacco and alcohol — tmooresr @ 10:36 pm

My father’s family puffed and puffed all their lives.  Well, you remember the Cuban Cigars?  Well, they were more naughty than that.  My grandmother told me that my great grandfather was never without a “black” cigarette or cigar in his hand.  They even rolled their own!  What I didn’t know until I was older was that my English great grandmother puffed at home as well–never in public. When I began gathering family memorabilia, my grandmother gave me the family “strikers.”  The striker with the image of Queen Victoria was my great grandfather’s and dates to about 1890.  The washed silver one with the portrait of Edward VII dates to about 1905 and belonged to my paternal grandfather.  One of the silver strikers belonged to my great grandmother.  Puffers they were, but with royal images on their strikers.  Funny!  Funny because I have never smoked in my entire life.  Also funny because not one of my paternal ancestors died of smoking-related illnesses!  OLD AGE got them in the end!

THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON REGIMENT RIDING STICK: Once owned by Earl Mountbatten and then by the Duke of Beaufort

Filed under: THE MOORE FAMILY — tmooresr @ 7:45 am

This interesting Duke of Wellington Regiment riding stick belonged to my father.  He received it as a gift from the Duke of Beaufort who had received it from Lord Louis Mountbatten of Burma.  I thought you might like to see it.  It has been in my father’s chests, but I think it is time for it to surface.  Enjoy.

CHILDREN IN LONDON: DAY 2 AT WEMBLEY STADIUM FOR A SOCCRY GAME. BIG DEAL FOR TWO BOYS WHO HAVE PLAYED SOCCER ALL THEIR LIVES AT HOME!

Filed under: CHILDREN,THE MOORE FAMILY — tmooresr @ 7:33 am

Young eleven-year-old boys in London are challenging to keep excited since they could sleep 24 hours a day when traveling.  My son Thomas knows the tricks:  fat tire bike rides, soccer games, etc..  I will post their activities daily to give other parents who are planning a trip to London with children ideas for their trip.  It is fun for Grandpa to be home and enjoying it by email–let me assure you!

QUEEN VICTORIA’S GOLDEN JUBILEE: MY GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER’S WALL SCONCES — I wonder if people would like reproductions

Filed under: STYLE,THE MOORE FAMILY — tmooresr @ 10:43 am

We have placed these sconces in our household help’s bedroom.  They have been in our family for five generations.  I really like them, and I wonder if I should have them reproduced.  I think they are wonderful.

AN OLD ENGLISH FAMILY’S TREASURES BEGIN TO SURFACE

Filed under: antiques,THE MOORE FAMILY — tmooresr @ 10:56 am

All my uncles and aunts are gone now, and my brother and I are beginning to inherit family items which were once disbursed.  I treasure these family heirlooms because they tell me a lot about the taste and interests of my ancestors.  The first item I received recently is my 1780 English grandfather’s bellows.  They have certainly been used, but they still retain their black lacquer and “japanned” decoration.  It is amazing how they have survived these past 225 years traveling from one generation to another to the present day.  I remember them as a child in my grandfather’s house;  he never used them, but they were on his library mantel.

The big surprise was inheriting my third great grandmother’s tilt top tea table.  The note written by my great grandmother states that it belonged to her great grandmother and was purchased about 1850 for her home in London. I suppose it came to the States with my grandmother.  I have put it in my office where I can enjoy it every day.  I hope you like it.
