THE COMMEMORATIVE CHINA: BUCKINGHAM PALACE — THE ROYAL COLLECTION

May I suggest that those looking for a special gift or souvenir from your trip to London. please may I suggest the gift shop at Buckingham Palace.  The porcelain dinner services were inspired from the Royal Services once used by various members of the Royal Family.  I have been gathering various pieces from these services for several years, and we enjoy using them at our dinner table.  The china really delights our guests.  The commemorative china is very collectible and excellent quality

THE GIFT SHOP AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE: COLLECTING THE QUEEN’S PORCELAIN

Filed under: The Queen's Gallery — tmooresr @ 4:52 pm

The gift shop at Buckingham Palace is a wonderful part of anyone’s visit to the Palace.  Almost every year, the Queen releases quality copies of some of her finest china from collections starting with examples from the services of George III, to George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria.  The “hot item” at the moment is the CORONATION PLATE which is brilliant red laced with gold.  I have picked up the pin box for friends, and I just acquired the large charger which I think is one of the most beautiful piece of china this Queen has created.  If you really want a souvenir from your trip to London, I suggest a piece of china from the Queen’s collection at the Queen’s Gallery.  Take a look.

THE QUEEN’S GALLERY AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE: THE GEORGE III EXHIBITION

I have been attending the exhibitions in the Queen’s Gallery  at Buckingham Palace where the Royal Collection is on display, one exhibition after another for many years.  Of all the exhibitions, I enjoyed the George III exhibition most of all.  Prince Charles has been a great fan of King George, and I am certain the exhibition was supported by the Prince.  Sir Hugh Robert’s definitive publication about the collection of George III was a massive effort, and I often enjoy my volume  as it sits on the central table in the sitting room of my office.  The Prince of Wales admired the tremendous contributions of the old King, especially in farming, science, plants and trees, the library collection, the Royal Collection and art, the Royal Academy, porcelain, architecture, and family life.  The Prince of Wales celebrated the Queen’s birthday at Kew Palace, King George III’s small Dutch House near his family home, the White House–now in Kew Gardens.  The exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery was extensive, and the quality from the Royal Collection was unmatched.  This is an image of one of the rooms, taken during the exhibition.  Several of my favorite pieces of furniture and paintings are in this exhibition.  Oh memories!  Thank goodness for photographs.

THE QUEEN’S GALLERY AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE: “THE NORTHERN RENAISSANCE EXHIBITION”

Filed under: The Queen's Gallery — tmooresr @ 11:26 pm

The current exhibition at Buckingham Palace  ”THE NORTHERN RENAISSANCE”  is one of the finest exhibitions I have ever attended at the Queen’s Gallery.   The GEORGE III EXHIBITION was spectacular indeed, but the current exhibition stunned me.  Holbein’s portraits and Durer’s drawings held me in awe.  I stood in the Queen’s Gallery and marveled at the quality and quantity of the finest works of art from the Northern Renaissance period.  To stand before Holbein’s drawings of the Thomas More family was a great moment for me.  I have known this man through literature and portrait copies all my life.  I have been personally teased with expressions like SAINT THOMAS MORE since I was young and certainly during my Renaissance studies in later life.  When I was in graduate school, I wrote a research paper on UTOPIA–it all seems so long ago now!  But the greatness and principled mind of this great Renaissance figure has influenced my life;  and, there were Holbein’s sketches in front of me.  When I was a young man, my father framed for me a large copy of the Holbein portrait of Thomas More in New York at the Frick which I still have hanging on my wall in my office.  It was a personal moment for me on Thursday.  I have always wanted to see the “copy” of Holbein’s great wall depicting the family of Henry VIII—the original having been destroyed in a fire in Whitehall.  There it was!  What really interested me was the stories of how these great masterpieces came into the Royal Collection.  I found that the great contributors to the Royal Collection for the items in this great exhibition were FIRST AND ABOVE ALL Prince Albert the Prince Consort who loved and personally collected many of these works.  Then, of course, there was Charles I.  And, as expected, there was George IV.  Prince Albert, Charles I, and George IV–we honor you and show our gratitude.  I was thrilled.  Here are a few images which I was allowed to take without my flash equipment, but I am happy to have my own pictures of some of the greatest works in the Royal Collection which have meant a great deal to me during my own lifetime.  Hold on;  her we go!
