ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIN CHESTS IN HISTORY: The Greville Jewel Chest

Filed under: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother,Trivia — tmooresr @ 12:14 am

The enormous collections of diamonds and the famous emerald necklace (once belonging to Marie Antoinette) were delivered to Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI and later Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in this tin trunk.  This important collection was left to the Queen Mother by Mrs. Greville, the Queen’s very close friend whose home and Polesdon Lacey offered privacy for the honeymoon of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.  If this tin chest could talk, what tales it could tell.  Certainly, one of the most famous tin chests in history.  I suppose this is a bit of “trivia,” but it is very interesting to me.

Did you know that in 1679 NELL GWYNN’S Mother stumbled, while drunk, into a pond in Chelsea and died.  Now that is important trivia!

LONDON MAYOR BORIS JOHNSON and DAVID LETTERMAN ON CBS “LATE SHOW”

Oh my goodness, this is hilarious!  London Mayor Boris Johnson taught me two bits of trivia this evening:  (1) it rains more in Rome than it does in London  (2)  Mayor Boris Johnson is a New Yorker;  he was born in New York and moved with his parents to London when he was five years old.  Hm!  He never seemed like an Eton/Oxford/Sandhurst man!

MARLBOROUGH HOUSE: Queen Alexandra’s pet cemetery

Filed under: Trivia — tmooresr @ 4:34 am

I love  trivia, especially when it deals with bees, sheep, dogs, and chickens–funny combination, but that is just me!  Queen Alexandra loved her dogs who were part of her “family” atmosphere which she created with her grandchildren.  Her biographer Lady Batiscombe said Queen Alexandra had no control over her grandchildren, and they were wild as march hares.  I grinned when I read that comment in her biography of the Queen and thought to myself:  I’LL BET SHE HAD NO CONTROL OF HER BELOVED DOGS EITHER.   When I ran across this image of Queen Alexandra’s pet cemetery at Marlborough House, I had to smile from ear to ear.   What really struck me was the marker for Edward VII’s last dog Caesar who walked in the King’s funeral cortege in front of the Kaiser and caused a great stir when the Kaiser resented following a dog.  Look at the snapshot;  you will see Caesar–the first marker.  (His dog collar said  I AM THE KING’S DOG–all in jewels, created by Faberge.)  I think it is wonderful.
